BLACKSBURG, Va. – Indiana Women's Soccer wrapped up its non-conference portion of the schedule with a 4-2 victory against JMU on Sunday in the Virginia Tech Invitational. Two of Indiana's goals came from redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown, who notched her first career multi-goal performance.
IU's three first-half goals was the most for the Hoosiers since scoring three in the second half against George Mason on Sept. 5, 2014, which was also the last time the program has netted four goals in a game.
"Huge win for us today just to close out the non-conference season," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "We knew JMU was going to be a battle. Tons of goals scored in the first half. We went up first early then had to come from behind."
The game featured five total first-half goals, including a flurry of four goals scored in a span of two minutes and 46 seconds with each team netting a pair.
Indiana's first score of the game came early as junior Kayla Smith picked up a service from freshman Meghan Scott inside the six-yard box and buried it to the right of JMU goalkeeper Maggie Buxton. Fellow freshman Julia De Angelis also picked up an assist on Smith's goal, marking her first career point.
The Dukes looked to respond as they fired off five consecutive shots and finally broke though on an equalizer from Stephanie Hendrie in the 24th minute. JMU took the lead 48 seconds later as Steffi Page picked up a service from Haley Crawford and pushed it just inside the far post past Indiana goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu.
IU took just 59 seconds to knot the game up as sophomore Caroline Dreher scored her second goal of the year on an assist from sophomore Maya Piper in the 26th minute of action.
Then, less that one minute later, Brown netted what would prove to be the gamewinner. After getting Buxton one-on-one, Brown's first shot was saved as it was batted down by the goalkeeper. However, Brown followed her rebound and sent up another shot, which found the back of the net to make it 3-2.
JMU came out of the halftime trying to find another equalizer as the Dukes tested L'Hommedieu with a pair of on-target looks in the first 20 minutes of play. L'Hommedieu finished the game with five saves as she earned her third win of the season.
Brown put the game away in the 66th minute after sophomore Justine Lynn got a throw in from senior Veronica Ellis and served it in to the far post, allowing Brown to head the ball into the top right corner of the net.
The Hoosiers saw eight different players register at least one point in the victory.
"This weekend we really, really started to find ourselves," said Berbary. "We've been talking a lot as a group about having good individual performances then coming together as a team. I really think we did that this weekend from Friday to Sunday."
Indiana continues its four-game road swing as the Hoosiers travel to Northwestern on Thursday to open Big Ten play. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network at 8 p.m. ET.
