BLOOMINGTON - Caroline Dreher thrives under pressure.
The Indiana women's soccer sophomore has been that way in all aspects of her life. But the thing about Caroline and high-pressure situations is that it doesn't affect her in the way most people react to adversity.
In other words, Caroline doesn't feel the pressure. On the pitch, she's an invaluable asset to the Hoosiers with her ability to work in every field position. Off the pitch, she's maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
"I see it as more of an opportunity to continue it," Caroline said about her high academic marks. "I don't see the pressure in it because I'm so happy that I've been able to do it in the last couple semesters. I'm not pressured by it. I'm more excited that I'm able to keep doing it."
Caroline was a direct admit to Indiana's Kelley School of Business, which is partly why she came to Indiana in the first place. The field itself piques Caroline's interest, but it also caters to her competitive nature.
"It was something I decided I wanted to do in high school," she said. "I'm interested in a lot of things, but business interests me in a special way. I love the Kelley School, I love how competitive it is, and I love the environment. I definitely embrace the challenge of it being one of the most difficult schools in the country."
The other major pull factor that led to Caroline's arrival at Indiana was this soccer team, largely due to the Indiana coaching staff. Caroline first came to Indiana when her high school team visited for a training camp, and she fell in love with the Indiana way of doing things on the pitch.
"It's been a great experience," Caroline said. "I really like the energy that they bring into this program. It's awesome. A whole year of that has molded myself and my classmates as players and teammates. It's helped bring energy and effort, and the best attitude to every practice and every game."
The feeling is mutual for the Indiana coaches, who didn't hesitate when describing what Caroline brings to the team. Her versatility, her ability to play well with both feet, and her game sense were noted, but it goes beyond that for head coach Amy Berbary.
"She's the epitome of a student-athlete," Berbary said. "She's a student first, and a soccer player second. She has great character, and she has a calmness about her. She's very approachable, a great teammate and encourages all the time. She continues to push herself too – I don't think we've seen the best of her yet. As she continues to evolve as a soccer player and continues to get older, we're going to see more great things out of her as a soccer player."
Aiding Caroline's ability to make a smooth transition from high school to the college ranks was the Hoosier HEROES mentorship program. Her mentor, track & field athlete Sydney Clute, made a significant impact on her first year experience at Indiana.
"I liked her friendliness and the attention she gave to me," Caroline said about her freshman year mentor. "She was a great listener, and it was fun to see her around the department. She would check in every once and a while, and we would talk about things. It's fun to know somebody older who's not on your team, but is also in the Kelley School of Business. It was nice to talk about classes with her."
The help she received through the program turned into a will to repay the favor. Caroline is now a Hoosier HEROES mentor, helping a fellow student-athlete have an equally successful first year at Indiana. Caroline has always been one to help others, but she's glad to have a program and an athletic department that makes initiatives like Hoosier HEROES such a priority.
"It's been awesome," she said. "Every single person in the department greets you with a smile, asking how the season is going and what you're up to, including how your 6 a.m. workouts went. It's like one big family, and I'm happy to be a part of it."
Caroline is amidst her second season with the Indiana women's soccer team, and has already scored two goals through the first eight games. She scored her first career goal in a 1-0 win at Butler, Indiana's first win of the year.
