OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – The Indiana men's golf team posted a team score of 296 (+16) and is in a three-way tie for 10th place out of 15 teams at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. The field is bunched up after 18 holes, with IU just five shots behind fourth place Purdue.
Junior Brendon Doyle's opening round 72 put him in a tie for 16th at 2-over par. He was one of 14 players to play the par 3's under par on day one (-1). Doyle, who started on hole No. 10, birdied his second hole but followed it up with a bogey the next hole to fall back to even par. He then went bogey-birdie on holes 15 and 16 on his way to making the turn in even par. Then on his second nine holes, he carded two bogeys and seven pars to put him at 2-over par.
Senior Andrew Havill was just one shot behind Doyle, closing his day with a 73 and a tie for 23rd while his four birdies in his round was tied for seventh-most among all golfers on day one. He began his round on No. 10 and went bogey-birdie to start and then made the turn at 2-over par following bogeys on 16 and 17. He wasted no time in getting one of those shots back with a birdie on No. 1 and then another one on No. 4. But he finished round with a bogey-birdie-double bogey-bogey combination to put him at 1-over par.
Freshman Broch Ochsenreiter played his first nine holes in 3-over par thanks to three bogeys before he made the turn. On his back nine, he carded a pair of birdies but they were offset by a bogey on his 16th hole and a double bogey on his final hole to put him at 4-over par for the day (74) and a tie for 29th.
Jake Brown got off to a rocky start on his first nine with five bogeys and one birdie and then carded a 3-over score on his back nine to post a score of 77 (+7) and tie for 60th.
The fifth golfer competing towards the team was junior Matthew Weber, who logged an 80 in round one and is tied for 73rd at 10-over par.
Also 10-over par after round one was redshirt sophomore Jack Sparrow, who is competing as an individual.
Due to potential weather threats on Saturday, tee times have been moved up to 9:00 a.m. ET/8:00 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
