BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football players and coaches met with the media Monday for the Hoosiers' weekly press conference leading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Wake Forest.
Each week we will compile five quotes and storylines recapping the previous game and previewing the upcoming one. This weekend IU will play at Memorial Stadium, looking to close out the non-conference season with a clean 3-0 slate.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "I think they are a solid team. Great on defense. They are playing great in the kicking game. They have taken care of the football and they are playing team football and they have had three really good team wins."
Wake is coming off of a 17-point victory over Delaware on Saturday. The Demon Deacons held the Blue Hens to just 94 yards of offense and limited them to eight first downs.
In their week two matchup, Wake Forest was able to take down Duke. The Blue Devils coughed the ball up three times in the loss.
Sophomore defensive lineman Jacob Robinson: "We used it to recover in preparation for these next 10 weeks. But we also used it to get better. We watched film and hit it really hard on the practice field."
Indiana was off this past weekend with an early season bye week. The rest is critical for a team gearing up for 10 consecutive games. After a few days off, the team hit the practice field hard to prepare for this weekend's clash with Wake Forest.
Associate head coach Tom Allen: "I like how hard we are playing. I think there is growth in understanding our system. We are communicating better. I think our run-fits have been improving, even during the bye week. We just have to finish."
Coach Allen has the defense playing with a mindset that Indiana defenses have not played with in years past. Indiana ranks 24th nationally (fourth in the Big Ten) in rushing yards per game and that will be tested again this weekend. Wake Forest comes into this contest averaging over 200 yards on the ground.
The biggest change has come on the scoreboard. The Hoosiers are giving up just 16.5 points per game. Last season, Indiana allowed almost 34 points a game.
Fifth-year senior wide receiver Mitchell Paige: "They are good on defense. They are only giving up 12 points a game. They are going to be really tough. I am excited for the challenge, and it is going to be a big challenge."
Indiana's offense will be put to the test this weekend. Wake Forest has been stout defensively in the early stages of the season, yielding just 12.3 points per contest. That ranks 13th nationally. Additionally, they have allowed less than 250 yards a game, which ranks sixth in the country.
Wilson: "Wake comes in as a stout team and then we roll into nine straight Big Ten games. So getting ready to get real and get serious, and I think our guys are looking forward to the challenge. Will be a big game and a good week."
Indiana is looking to start 3-0 for the second consecutive season. A victory on Saturday would mark the first time IU has done that since the 2009-10 seasons. A win would also give the Hoosiers five consecutive regular season wins dating back to last season.
