Hoosiers and Boilermakers to Square off At Mackey Arena

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After their opening Big Ten win against Northwestern, the Indiana volleyball team faces a challenging schedule ahead, which starts with a trip to West Lafayette to battle Purdue on Saturday Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The match will be played at Mackey Arena and the Boilermakers are expecting over 8,000 fans in attendance.
The Hoosiers come in with a record of 12-2 and 1-0 in the conference, while Purdue dropped a five set match against Illinois on Wednesday and come in with a 10-2 overall mark and are 0-1 in conference play.
The Win Over Northwestern
Freshman Hayden Huybers earned player of the match honors as she posted 10 kills on 10 swings with no errors for a perfect hitting percentage. Huybers also added two blocks and two aces. Huybers currently leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage at .465.
Megan Tallman led the Hoosiers in kills going into the third set and finished the match with a career-high eight kills to go along with 46 assists, eight digs and three aces.
Tallman currently ranks fifth in program history in career assists with 3,410 and needs 91 assists to become the leader in career assists in the rally-scoring era.
The Monon Spike
In 1975, a heated rivalry between the Purdue and Indiana volleyball teams began.
A little incentive was added to the series in 1981 with the creation of the Monon Spike. The traveling trophy is presented to the winning team after one of the two annual matches.
The match at Purdue this weekend will be for the Monon Spike.
Big Ten and NCAA Ranks
The Hoosiers rank atop the best in the Big Ten and NCAA in several statistical categories. Indiana ranks fourth in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten in total aces with 105 and sixth in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten in aces per set at 2.10. The Hoosiers have three individuals (Allison Hammond-second, Taylor Lebo-third and Megan Tallman-seventh) who rank in the top-10 in the conference in aces per set. When it comes to hitting percentage the Hoosiers rank fifth in the Big Ten and eighth in the NCAA with a hitting mark of .298. Freshman Hayden Huybers leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage at .465 and senior Jazzmine McDonald ranks fourth in the conference with a .413 hitting efficiency.

The Hoosiers will welcome a pair of top-three opponents next weekend as they host No. 2 Minnesota on Friday Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. and take on No. 3 Wisconsin on Saturday Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at University Gym.
