BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer fell to No. 9 Minnesota on Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 3-0. Minnesota (7-2-1, 2-0-1 Big Ten) out-shot the Hoosiers, 19-5, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Eight of the Golden Gophers' shots came in the first half, but the game remained scoreless until the 43rd minute when Nikki Albrecht headed in a corner kick taken by Josee Stiever.
Indiana's lone shot of the half came on a good look from junior Kayla Smith in the fourth minute as she picked up a cross from freshman Meghan Scott. But, the shot went wide of the goal.
"We just have to be able to take care of the ball," said head coach Amy Berbary. "When you get those few chances against these great teams, we've got to be able to bury them."
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu earned a pair of saves in the first half of action and ended the game with five total, giving her 52 on the season.
The Hoosiers (4-6-1, 1-2-0 Big Ten) were unable to put another shot up until the 68th minute when senior Veronica Ellis and freshman Julia Gilliam each put up an attempt, but both were off target.
After Indiana earned a free kick just to the left of the 18-yard box in the 80th minute, freshman Sydney Kilgore jumped and headed the service, but it was blocked by a Minnesota defender.
Meanwhile, April Bockin made it 2-0 in favor of Minnesota in the 65th minute as April Bockin picked up a loose ball in the box and sent it in.
The final score of the game came 13 minutes later as Megan Koenig sent the ball to the top of the 18-yard box for Sydney Squires, who buried it.
Sophomore Caroline Dreher gave the Hoosiers their best look of the night as she sent a shot just under the crossbar with just seconds remaining in the game. However, Golden Gopher goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs dove to pop it out of play.
"We don't really give up," said redshirt senior Marissa Borschke. "We fought to the end. We almost scored with a second left in the game. I think that's something we can keep our heads up about is our fight."
Up next, the Hoosiers return to Armstrong Stadium to host Wisconsin on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all Indiana Women's Soccer home games is free of charge.
"We have to learn from it tomorrow when we go out to practice," said Borschke. "Then, bring the same energy and positivity on Sunday so we can get something out of it."
