WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four members of the Indiana University men's tennis team participated in the Purdue Fall Invitational over the weekend in West Lafayette.
A group of three freshmen, Payam Ahmadi, Zac Brodney, and William Piekarsky, got their first glimpse of college tennis at the three-day event. For assistant coach Mike Murray, this tournament was perfect for the newcomers.
"It was a good start, overall very positive." Murray said. "The guys got a good taste of the play and different pressure that comes along with college-level tennis."
Zac Brodney lost to the number one singles player on Ball State, before beating Fran Tonejc of Depaul, 4-6, 6-2, 13-11.
Payam Ahmadi played two close singles matches but fell in both.
William Piekarsky won his first ever match at IU, 6-3, 6-4. On the final day, Piekarsky lost in a third set to Pat Downs of Ball State.
The lone veteran representing the Hoosiers was senior Stefan Lugonjic.
In his first match, Lugonjic beat the top players of SIU and Olivet to reach the semi-finals of his flight. Murray says the tournament put the confidence in Lugonjic he need for a strong season.
Next, Murray and a select number of Hoosiers will go to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the All-American Invitation Oct. 1 – Oct. 10.
