BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football players and coaches met with the media Monday for the Hoosiers' weekly press conference leading into Saturday's 4 p.m. kickoff against Ball State.
Each week we will compile five quotes and storylines recapping the previous game and previewing the upcoming one. This weekend Indiana will play at Memorial Stadium for the first time in 2016.
Junior safety Tony Fields: "The defensive backs all got together this offseason and decided that the defense would go as we go, and we take that personally."
When the ball is in the air, Coach Allen wants his group to come down with it. The Hoosiers were able to do that on three occasions at Florida International. Redshirt junior cornerback Rashard Fant and junior linebacker Tegray Scales each recorded their first career pick-6s. Redshirt junior cornerback Ben Bach sealed the game with his first career interception off a deflection.
Fields saved the Hoosiers four points after carding a critical pass breakup and denying the Panthers a touchdown in the first quarter.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "I think we'll have to do that this week and still get the penetration, push you're talking about, try to minimize the run game."
Ball State will look to own the line of scrimmage in this weekend's matchup. The Cardinals registered over 300 yards on the ground in their dominating win over Georgia State.
Indiana did a great job of neutralizing the FIU rushing attack, giving up 63 yards.
One of the biggest tests for Tom Allen's defense will be stopping teams with downhill running schemes. The Hoosiers will get their first crack to prove they are ready against the Cardinals.
Defensive coordinator Tom Allen: "They physically dominated them in the second half, and it was impressive."
Ball State struggled to find their identity early in the game, but turned it on in the second half. The Cardinals established the run game and continued to wear down Georgia State on their way to 325 rushing yards.
Wilson: "I thought we played reasonably physical, and those are some things to build on."
Wilson prides his offense on the power running game. He wants to physically dominate every opponent at the point of attack.
Indiana ran for 246 yards on 52 carries (4.7 average), led by Devine Redding with 139 bruising yards on 22 attempts (6.1). Wilson hopes to continue to build off of this start and let the older, more experienced offensive line shoulder more of the load.
Redshirt junior tight end Danny Friend: "We take pride in finishing strong, whether that is in the weight room or out on the field. We are always trying to finish strong, and that means being our strongest in the fourth quarter."
Indiana was certainly at their best in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 22-0.
The Hoosiers will look for another dominating final frame in their home opener against Ball State on Saturday.
