ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana fought until the final second but couldn't overcome what was a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, as it fell 78-74 to Michigan on Tuesday night inside the Crisler Center.
Senior center Jenn Anderson tied a career-high 21 points and added a career-high 12 rebounds for her second career double-double while junior guard Tyra Buss added 21 points as well in her 54th-consecutive double-figure scoring game. The duo was joined in double figures by junior forward Amanda Cahill with 13 points and senior guard Alexis Gassion who added 12 points. Cahill also added eight rebounds, two assists and a steal while Gassion dished out four assists, two steals and a block.
Indiana (12-5, 2-2 B1G) shot 43.3 percent on the night and 92.9 percent from the free throw line including a 9-for-9 performance by Buss. But a 23.1 percent clip from 3-point range and combined 15 turnovers hampered IU in the loss as three Wolverines also scored in double figures led by 21 points from forward Hallie Thome.
IU opened up the first quarter with a steal led to a Cahill feeding Gassion in transition but trailed 6-5 in the early goings. A three-minute drought from the field was ended by another fastbreak bucket for Gassion before Buss converted on a 3-point play to take its first lead, 12-11, with 2:52 to play.
After Michigan (14-4, 3-1 B1G) regained the lead, IU took it back on consecutive buckets from Wickware and Gassion. But the Wolverines would beat the buzzer to close the first with an 18-16 lead.
Anderson posted back-to-back buckets for IU to begin the second quarter and tie it at 20-20 but Michigan went on a 9-0 run with six minutes remaining before the half. Foul trouble plagued the Hoosiers in the second, with three players picking up their second foul in the frame.
Buss and Cahill would combine for a 5-0 run for the Hoosiers and cut the deficit down to four, 29-25. But the Wolverines mustered up another run – this time a 6-0 – to stretch its lead to as many as 10. The Hoosiers took the momentum into the break, going on a 7-0 run in the final 3:09 but trailed 37-32.
Coming out in the third quarter, Indiana was fueled by a 3-pointer from senior guard Karlee McBride and an Anderson bucket to tie it up at 37-37. Michigan would build another lead on a 7-2 run before IU could cut the lead back down to five (49-44) on a Buss 3-point play. They would keep it within five with 2:20 remaining on an Anderson 3-point play but a 3-pointer by Michigan's Kysre Gondrezick closed out the quarter giving her team a 64-55 advantage.
IU won its only quarter in the fourth, 19-14, as it battled to the very end. Chipping away at what was a 12-point lead for the Wolverines with 8:26 remaining, Indiana made a run as Anderson scored three straight buckets to make it a 73-70 deficit with 2:36 remaining.
A foul by senior guard Amber Deane sent UM to the line where it made 1-of-2 but Anderson responded yet again to keep it within two. After a missed jumper by junior guard Katelynn Flaherty, IU was called for a travel with 15 seconds remaining in what was a turning point late in the game.
Adding two more at the line, Michigan went back up by four with 15 seconds remaining before Buss drove the basket and used the glass for the score. But forced to foul, Michigan sank a pair free throws with nine seconds to play to hold on for the win.
