BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – According to the most recent rankings from trackandfieldnews.com the Indiana Hoosier track and field team tops the rankings for dual teams on both the men's and women's sides.
"Although the dual meet rankings do not necessarily indicate success at the championship level, we are still encouraged by the ranking," said head coach Ron Helmer. "The ranking shows us that the hard work is being recognized. We have a deep, talented team and we look forward to the continual progress of this group."
The men's team holds the top spot after defeating two track and field rivals in head-to-head competition. IU defeated Tennessee 71.5-49.5 back on January 7th and handled Big Ten foe Purdue 93-41 this past weekend.
The SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio will host the Big Ten Championships again this season in a meet that will see seven men's teams ranked inside the top 25. Indiana ranks just ahead of the second seeded Illinois Fighting Illini. Purdue cracks the top 10 at seven despite the lopsided loss at the Gladstein Fieldhouse a handful of days ago. Rounding out the Big Ten teams inside the top 25 are: Nebraska (11), Iowa (13), Minnesota (17) and Wisconsin (22).
On the women's side, the Hoosiers toppled Tennessee by score of 65-53 in the first dual of the season. Against in-state rival Purdue the Hoosiers survived a close score, edging the Boilers 73-62.
Once again, the top 25 rankings are littered with Big Ten teams. Indiana leads the pack atop the leaderboard three spots higher than Purdue. Minnesota sits at sixth and Nebraska joins the two rivals inside the top 10 at ninth. Iowa (12), Illinois (17) and Wisconsin (20) complete the Big Ten teams in the top 25.
The No. 1 ranked dual teams will both be back in action at the Gladstein Invitational this weekend.
