BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - Indiana junior guard James Blackmon Jr. earned national honors as well as Big Ten accolades following two superb games last week. The native of Marion, Indiana, was named the NBCSports.com National Player of the Week and grabbed Big Ten Co-Player of the Week plaudits from the conference office.
It's the second time Blackmon has received the national award from NBCSports.com this season (Nov. 14) and it's also his second Big Ten weekly accolade as well.
In the two games last week - a win at Penn State and a win at home against Michigan State - Blackmon Jr. averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the floor and 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from behind the 3-point line.
On Wednesday at Penn State, he finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, and hit the game-winning 3-point field goal at the buzzer to give the Hoosiers a 78-75 win over the Nittany Lions. His buzzer beater was the first for the Hoosiers in Big Ten play since Kirk Haston beat #1 Michigan State, 59-58, in January 2001.
On Saturday against the Spartans, he went 6-of-10 from behind the 3-point line on his way to matching his career-high of 33 points. He is now 47th in career scoring with 1,072 points.
Blackmon's 16.5 points per game career average is the highest of any Hoosier player under Tom Crean. Cody Zeller is second at 16.1 points per game. He also leads the current junior class nationally by making 2.7 three-point field goals per game during his career and his career scoring average is the highest among the junior class in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers return to action this week with a pair of conference road games, traveling to Michigan on Thursday and Northwestern on Sunday.
