Appel Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore Madison Appel went a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles for the Hoosiers opening weekend and earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week for women's tennis, the league announced today.
Appel teamed up with senior Kim Schmider to provide the Hoosiers a key victory at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point in the Indiana win against Western Michigan. Appel and Schmider have combined for an 18-2 record in doubles this season.
Appel picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles against Western Michigan and came back in the second match of the day to give the Hoosiers a point with her 6-1, 6-1 win against Butler.
"Madison had a great opening weekend for us," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "Madison and Kim are playing great for us at doubles and Madison played really well at the top singles spot against Western Michigan and Butler. She continues to make improvements as she progresses in her career at Indiana."
Up next Appel and the Hoosiers host Washington State on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and Cincinnati on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
