Kuhn Continues Record Breaking Junior Season
1/27/2017 10:45:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Another week, another school record falls at the feet of Daniel Kuhn. This week's effort came in the 600m run. The junior superstar blazed around the track with a time of 1:15.88. That is the fastest time in the NCAA this season not run at altitude. He now owns the fifth and sixth fastest times ever run by a collegiate on a 200m track. Last season at the Big Ten Championships Kuhn took home gold with a time of 1:16.02, the third fastest collegiate time on an oversized track.
Jordan Huntoon ran a solid time of 1:19.85 in a second place effort in the 600m run. That time is just short of making the top 10 list at IU, but is a top 40 time nationally. Cooper Williams finished third in the event.
In the women's 600m run, the Hoosiers claimed the top three spots. Kendell Wiles was the first to cross with a time of 1:30.61. Her time is the seventh fastest time in the NCAA this season. Mackenzie Bollinger finished second with a career best time of 1:31.05. That time improves her standing inside the top 10 list, moving her into sixth all-time. Freshman Mallory Mulzer took third with a time of 1:33.14.
After four scored events in the heptathlon, Chase Pacheco holds a slight lead over Olympic Gold Medalist Derek Drouin. Pacheco scored 3,027 points through the first four events. Drouin tallied a second place total of 3,009 points. Pacheco's teammate, Andrew Huber, sits in fourth currently with 2,846 points. The three remaining events to be completed tomorrow are the 60m hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000m run.
Rachel Mather finished second in the women's high jump with a career best height of 1.73m (5-8). Her mark places her in a four-way tie for ninth in school history. Ari Nelson finished second in the long jump with a leap of 5.85m (19-2.5). Aaliyah Armstead took third in the event with a mark of 5.76m (18-10.75). For the first time this calendar year, Willie Morrison was unable to win the shot put, however he did finish third with a put of 18.80m (61-8.25). David Schall finished fourth in the event with a mark of 17.46m (57-3.5).
In the 60m hurdle trials, William Session and Adrian Mable posted the two fastest times, both earning spots in the finals. Session, 8.123, barely edged Mable, 8.130. The 60m hurdle finals are scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday. A trio of Hoosiers, Megan Grabowski, Brittany Thomas and Jaela Gay, earned a spot in tomorrow's 60m dash finals. The final eight will square off around 12:05 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
Jeremy Coughler turned in a gutsy performance in the men's 5,000m run. Following the rabbiting of teammate Carl Smith, Coughler was in second with 1,000m left in the race. He then sprinted the remaining five laps to secure the victory with a time of 14:21.77. Jackson Bertoli was third in the event.
The meet will continue tomorrow morning with the 60m hurdles for both the pentathlon and heptathlon. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:20 p.m.
