Bloomington, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team started the fall season by hosting the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Friday Sept. 29-Sunday Oct. 1.
The Hoosiers welcomed Cincinnati, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky for the tournament.
Junior Madison Appel went undefeated in singles and doubles as she tallied a 3-0 record in singles and teamed up with fellow junior Natalie Whalen to go 4-0 in doubles.
Whalen went 7-0 as well with three wins in singles and four wins in doubles with Appel.
Redshirt sophomore Caitlin Bernard went 2-1 in singles competition for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers played with four newcomers, which included three freshmen. All of the Indiana newcomers picked up victories during the weekend and got valuable playing experience.
Up next for the Hoosiers will be the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Murfreesboro, Tenn., which starts on Oct. 12.
"I thought we played well and got a lot of feedback we can use moving forward," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "This was our first competition of the fall and we are going to continue to work hard in practice as we use this fall season to get ready for spring competition."
