Bernard Makes Quarterfinal at ITA Regional Championships

Murfreesboro, Tenn. – Redshirt sophomore Caitlin Bernard highlighted the Indiana women's tennis team at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships as she reached the quarterfinal round on Saturday.

Bernard came into the tournament unseeded and after a first round win over Melissa Esguerra from East Tennessee State, Bernard took down No. 7 seed Ariadna Riley from Tennessee, 7-5, 6-3.

Bernard then beat No. 17 Isabel Iglesias in three sets and Ena Babic from Purdue, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16. Bernard matched up against No. 11 Justina Mikulskyte in the quarterfinal and came up short, 6-3, 6-1.

Junior Natalie Whalen won her first two matches, against opponents from Miami University and Xavier, both in three sets. Junior Madison Appel won her first-round match against Caroline Hall from UT-Chattanooga, 6-2, 6-1.

Appel and Whalen both won singles consolation matches, Appel 6-3, 6-1 over Alex Sabe from Purdue and Whalen, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 over Johanna Silva from Tennessee.

Up next the Hoosiers will host the IU Regional, Oct. 20-22 in Bloomington.
