IU Swimming & Diving Totals 13 Wins on First Day of Season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 6/10-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team opened the season on Friday in a double-dual meet against No. 2/3 Texas and No. 4/18 Florida at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium in Gainesville, Fla.
The Hoosiers got off to a fast start, winning 13 of the 26 events on the day, which included sweeping the relays. The Hoosiers also had nine individual wins on the evening.
The No. 6 Hoosier men lead No. 2 Texas, 134-109, and lead No. 4 Florida, 138-105. The No. 10 Indiana women lead No. 18 Florida, 144-99, and trail No. 3 Texas, 138-105. The double-dual meet will conclude tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Blake Pieroni had a great first night of the season, winning a pair of events with top times in the nation so far this year. Pieroni won the 200 freestyle with a NCAA B cut time of 1:34.10, before touching first in the 100 freestyle with a NCAA B cut mark of 43.18.
Lilly King also won a pair of events for the Hoosiers on Friday night in Gainesville. King won the 100 breast with the top time so far this year, touching with a NCAA B cut of 59.46. The Evansville, Ind. product also won the 200 IM with a NCAA B cut of 2:00.00.
Vini Lanza also had a nice showing, winning the 200 IM with the fastest time in the country so far this season – a NCAA B cut time of 1:46.56. Lanza then placed second in the 100 butterfly to Olympic champion Joseph Schooling, posting the second-fastest time in the nation with his mark of 46.68.
Ian Finnerty won the 100 breaststroke for the Hoosiers with the best time in the country, touching in 53.38 to earn a NCAA B cut. In the 200 IM, Finnerty placed second overall with a NCAA B cut of 1:47.73 that ranks as the third-best time in the country.
Kennedy Goss won the 200 freestyle for the Hoosiers with a NCAA B cut time of 1:46.79 that ranks as the sixth-best time this season, while Mohamed Samy won the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.15. Samy's mark is a NCAA B cut that ranks as the seventh-best this year in the NCAA. His mark also ranks him as the 10th-best performer in the event in IU history.
In the 50 freestyle, Ali Khalafalla came out fast, touching second with a NCAA B cut time of 19.82 that ranks as the third-best time this season in the country. For the IU women in the event, freshman Grace Haskett took second place with a time of 23.07. Her time ranks her as the 15th-fastest swimmer in the event in program history.
In the 100 fly, Christine Jensen took second with a NCAA B cut time of 54.30, while Shelby Koontz was third with a NCAA B cut of 54.44.
Ali Rockett took second in the 100 backstroke with a NCAA B cut mark of 53.98, while Cassy Jernberg set a personal-best in the 1,000 freestyle, taking third place. The sophomore touched the wall in a time of 9:58.00, ranking her as the 15th-best performer in school history.
In the diving well, the Hoosiers had a great showing, with four divers posting six NCAA Zone qualifying marks in the first meet of the season.
Redshirt junior Jessica Parratto led the way, winning the 1-meter dive with a NCAA qualifying score of 302.85. Parratto also earned her qualifying score in the 3-meter, placing second overall with a total of 332.85.
On the men's side, freshman Andrew Capobianco had a great debut, earning his NCAA qualifying scores in both the 1 and 3-meter dives. Capobianco placed second in the 1-meter with a score of 320.40 and took home fifth in the 3-meter with a mark of 324.40.
Also in the 3-meter dive, senior Cody Coldren placed third with a NCAA qualifying score of 332.55, while freshman Mory Gould took fourth with a qualifying total of 331.60.
In the relays, the Hoosiers had a pair of great efforts in the 200 medley relays, as both the men and women took first. The Hoosier women's team of Rockett, King, Jensen and Haskett touches the wall in a NCAA B cut time of 1:37.30. That mark is the fastest in the nation and ranks eighth all-time in school history.
On the men's side, the IU 200 medley relay team of Samy, Finnerty, Lanza and Khalafalla won with a time of 1:27.12. The time is the second-best in the country so far this season.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Hoosier men dominated, winning with the top time in the nation. The team of Samy, freshman Bruno Blaskovic, Khalafalla and Pieroni touched in a time of 2:54.62, over four seconds clear of the field.
On the women's side, the team of Haskett, Rockett, Goss and Koontz made it a clean sweep of the relays for the Hoosiers, winning with a time of 3:20.93.
The No. 6/10-ranked Indiana Hoosiers men's and women's swimming and diving teams will conclude action against Texas and Florida on Saturday morning in Gainesville, Fla. Swimming gets underway at 10:00 a.m. ET.
