BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped its home finale to No. 25 Rutgers on Saturday, falling on a Scarlet Knight golden goal in the 96th minute.
The loss put the Hoosiers (6-8-4, 2-5-3 Big Ten) out of contention for the Big Ten Tournament with just one game to play in the regular season.
"Soccer is a crazy game," said head coach Amy Berbary. "I thought we put everything we possibly had into this game. We knew our backs were against the wall, we didn't panic and we put together a really good showing. It was just unfortunate we weren't able to put one in the back of the net on the couple of really good opportunities we had."
The Scarlet Knights (11-2-4, 5-2-3 Big Ten) outshot Indiana, 15-12, including a 7-3 advantage on shots on goal. Junior Maya Piper led the offensive threat for the Hoosiers, putting up six shots on the night.
Indiana did hold a 4-2 first-half shot advantage, highlighted by a look from Piper in the 16th minute that just stayed high above the crossbar.
IU freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel opened the second half with a pair of back-to-back saves on looks by Alexa Ferreira and Kenie Wright. Kopel finished with six stops on the night.
The Scarlet Knights continued to threaten as a look by Amira Ali knocked off the crossbar in the 50th minute.
Indiana responded with a pair of blocked looks from redshirt junior Mykayla Brown, but the Hoosiers' best offensive looks came in the final 17 minutes of regulation as Indiana forced Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy to make three saves.
The first came in the 83rd minute as sophomore Sydney Kilgore put up the Hoosiers' strongest look of the game. After senior Kayla Smith sent the ball in from the left, it bounced off Piper and fell to Kilgore. Kilgore knocked the ball with her left foot from four yards out, but Murphy was there to tip the ball up and over the net. The resulting corner ended in a saved header by Piper.
Piper put up one final attempt for the Hoosiers in the 89th minute, but Murphy was there again to send the game to overtime.
Piper picked up where she left off in overtime, putting up two shots in the first two minutes of action. However, the first attempt was blocked and the second was sent in wide left.
The Scarlet Knights ended the game a few minutes later as Wright served the ball deep into the box, finding the head of LaPlant, who buried it from five yards out.
Up next, the Hoosiers wrap up the season on the road as they travel to No. 19 Ohio State Wednesday night. The Buckeyes secured at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title on Friday and have locked up the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
"Ohio State is a huge rival for us," said Berbary. "We have the opportunity to play the No. 19 team in the country and send our seniors out against one of our biggest rivals. It's another chance for us to prove that we're a very, very talented team and we came up short this year."
