Receveur Named Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following her victory last Friday, redshirt junior Katherine Receveur was named the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year for 2017 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) it was announced on Thursday.
Receveur was selected by a vote of USTFCCA member coaches from 25 programs within the Great Lakes Region. She will be honored at the NCAA Cross Country Championships banquet that will take place tonight, Thursday, November 16, in Louisville, Ky. along with the men's Great Lake Region Athlete of the Year, Ben Flanagan from the University of Michigan.
The Louisville, Ky. native became the second woman in Hoosier history to win the Great Lakes Regional title last Friday in Terre Haute, Ind. where she finished her 6K with a time of 20:34.9. It marked the first Great Lakes title for the Hoosiers since Kim Betz in 1987.
Receveur has had a dominating season thus far, earning honors for every meet she has participated in. She was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week three times this season, which makes her the first Hoosier to be nominated the Big Ten Athlete of the Week three times in their career, nonetheless three times in one season.
The first nomination was for her performance at the Battle of Beantown, where she placed second overall in the women's 5K with a time of 17:03. Her efforts aided Indiana to tie for second place, which elevated the program to its highest ever ranking in the USTFCCCA polls, No. 14 in the country.
The second nomination was for her record setting performance at the Sam Bell Invitational. Receveur finished first overall in the women's 6K with the time of 20:14.08, which, at the time, set an all-time record on the IU Championships Cross Country 6K Course. The record was previously held by Emily MacLeod of Michigan State (20:24.70).
The third nomination for her performance at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Receveur was the first Big Ten athlete and 10th overall to cross the finish with the time of 20:00.5, which was a 14 second improvement from her record setting 6K time at the Sam Bell Invitational.
Receveur started her postseason bid on Oct. 29 when she earned the Big Ten individual title, earning first-time All-Big Ten honors and set another new all-time record on the IU Championships Cross Country 6K Course. Receveur is the second woman in Hoosier history to win the Big Ten title, last by Michelle Dekkers in 1990. Receveur set the all-time record for the second time this season with the time of 20:10.3, which will remain the all-time since this is the last season that the current IU Championships Cross Country Course will be used due to construction.
She will look to earn the honor of All-American in cross country for the second time this Saturday. She earned her first All-American honor last year after her 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships. She was the first Hoosier women to earn an All-American honor since 2008 (Wendi Robinson). Her 11th place finish was the highest in the NCAA Championships for Indiana since three-time All-American Michelle Dekkers finished third in 1989.
Receveur along with sophomore Ben Veatch and the Hoosier women's team will close out their season this Saturday at the NCAA Cross Country Champions that will take place at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
