Indiana’s travel party earned 15 pins on the first day of the season
CLARION, Pa. – Indiana's wrestling team took the mat for the first time in competitive action this season on Sunday morning at the 2017 Clarion Open, hosted by Clarion University. The Hoosiers battled throughout the day for a third-place team finish, scoring 84.5 points while earning three individual podium finishes.
Sophomore Devin Skatzka (174) led the group, opening his second varsity season with a second-place finish and three bonus point victories. Skatzka pinned his first two opponents, both in the second period, before scoring an 18-3 (7:00) technical fall in the semifinals. The returning NCAA qualifier suffered his first loss of the year in the championship bout, an 8-5 decision against Will Schany (Virginia).
Junior Cole Weaver (141) secured his third career podium placement, posting a 4-1 start to the season on the way to a third-place finish. Weaver won his first two matches, allowing just 3 points to each opponent, before dropping a 10-4 decision to No. 10 Brock Zacherl (Clarion). Weaver responded in the consolation semifinals with an 8-1 decision victory, eventually defaulting into the third podium spot.
Junior Fletcher Miller (285) manufactured a positive start to the year with his third-place finish and three first period pins. Miller experienced déjà vu from last year, beginning his season with a 2:29 win by fall in the round of 16. The second-year starter bowed out of championship contention after getting pinned in the semifinals, but rebounded with a 60-second pin in the consolation semifinals and a 96-second stick in the third-place match.
Another trio of Hoosier grapplers fell one match short of the four-man podium. Junior Elijah Oliver (125) won four matches in total—three by major decision and one by a 5:17 fall—including two consecutive major decisions in the championship bracket. Oliver bounced out of title contention with a 5-3 decision to Louie Hayes (Virginia) and lost the podium battle with No. 7 Zeke Moisey (West Virginia) by one point.
Sophomore Norman Conley (184) showcased a productive preseason by earning three bonus point victories before leaving the day one match too soon for a podium spot. Conley won a 10-2 major decision in the opening round and followed with a first period pin to reach the quarterfinals. He earned another win in the wrestle-backs against his freshman teammate, Spencer Irick (184).
Bryce Martin split his four matches on the mat but still made it to the consolation round of four. Martin scored a 17-7 major decision in the first round and picked up a 5-3 decision win in the consolation bracket.
Five Hoosiers reached a significant milestone in their young careers with their first appearances in an IU singlet as varsity wrestlers, and all five achieved victories: Brandon James (133), Davey Tunon (149), Austin Holmes (149), Spencer Irick (184), and Zach Horwitz (285). James, Tunon, and Holmes each scored two wins by fall for Indiana.
Up Next: Indiana (0-0) at Bloomsburg (0-0)
Thursday, Nov. 16 • 7:00 p.m. ET • Nelson Field House • Bloomsburg, Pa.
The next time these Hoosiers don the Cream & Crimson singlets, it will be the start of their dual meet schedule. Indiana travels to Bloomsburg University after a full week in the wrestling room for a showdown on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
The Hoosiers and Huskies have evenly split their four encounters since 1989, but all have occurred on a neutral mat. Indiana has won the last two dual meets, most recently in Norfolk, Virginia on January 13, 2006. The Huskies will wrestle a tri at Appalachian State, against the hosting Mountaineers and Davidson, prior to their meet with the Hoosiers.
Indiana will continue their eastward trek after the meet at Bloomsburg, taking part in the 2017 Navy Classic on Saturday, November 18. The Hoosiers won the team title at last year's tournament, hosted annually by the United States Naval Academy, winning two individual titles (Bryce Martin, 165; Nate Jackson, 184) and nine total podium finishes.
