BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amanda Janney is proud to announce the six signees for the Hoosiers' class of 2022. Maddie Boehm (Grasonville, Md.), Peyton Becker (Pocomoke City, Md.), Hailey Couch (Easton, Pa.), Mary Kate Kesler (Louisville, Ky.), Megan Mahlandt (Ephrata, Pa.), and Jessica McGivern (West Deptford, N.J.) will continue their field hockey and academic careers at Indiana University next fall.
"This is one of my fastest and most athletic classes I've ever recruited," Janney said. "These six have the speed and hockey experience to help take our team to the next level of winning Big Tens. This is a talented group of young ladies who are leaders on the field, in their classrooms and in their home communities. They will be a great addition to our current team as their work ethic, hustle and desire to win will continue to enhance the team culture we are building here."
The incoming group matches the amount of departing players from Indiana's senior class. Janney's fourth set of newcomers will see a load of young talent on the attacking end, as four players tallied more than 100 points in their prep careers. Three of the freshmen hail from high schools with links to players on the active roster, and five served as team captains in their senior season.
The Hoosiers found a goal-getting gem in Hailey Couch. Tallying 98 goals and 57 assists (253 points) in four years under coach Casey Eck, Couch smashed Easton's 49-year goal record in addition to the school's career assist mark. Couch entered the Easton Hall of Fame after earning an All-State first team selection, two first team All-EPC honors, and captaincy her senior year. Easton qualified for district playoffs all four seasons of Couch's career and, in her senior season, earned their first State playoff spot in 27 seasons.
Couch was also a member of the USA Field Hockey U-19 Indoor National Team and played for the USA youth indoor teams for four years. One season, Couch earned the opportunity to play internationally in the Netherlands, falling just short of the title by a shootout to the host nation. She also won four titles at the National Indoor Tournament with her club team, X-Calibur, coached by Brian Hope and Alli Lokey.
Couch attends the same high school as former Hoosier great Audra Heilman (2011-14), a two-time NFHCA All-American in 2013 and 2014.
Maddie Boehm recorded 203 points (68 goals, 67 assists) in four years under head coaches Debbie McQuaid and Julie Corson at Saints Peter and Paul High School. She led the team with 34 goals and 24 assists—together a school record at 92 points—her senior season and led at least one of those categories during her final three years. Boehm is twice an All-Maryland honoree with four All-ESIAC first team selections, winning the conference's Player of the Year award this fall. Boehm was rated one of Max Field Hockey's Top 100 Players in both 2016 and 2017.
The Sabres finished runner-up at the ESIAC Championship in 2015 and 2017, winning the regular season title this year. Boehm will complete her fourth varsity lacrosse season this spring before heading to Bloomington. She will join her Oranje club teammate, Peyton Becker, as IU newcomers next year.
Another talented forward joins the Hoosiers' forward line in Peyton Becker, who registered 168 points (61 goals, 46 assists) in four seasons under coach Brandi Castaneda and coach Susan Pusey at Pocomoke High School. Her 13 goals and 15 assists as a freshman were enough for a first team All-Bayside selection and the team's Rookie of the Year honor. From there, Becker earned two more All-Bayside honors and the conference's Offensive Player of the Year award as a junior. After 43 points and a conference title this season, Becker could receive her fourth All-Conference selection in the coming months.
Pocomoke won three Bayside Conference Championships with Becker and made the title game all four seasons. They won two East Region titles and made the Semi-State game in 2014, returning the next year to win the 1A Maryland State Championship.
Becker has a diverse skill set after earning two varsity letters in basketball, softball, and track & field during her career. Becker's athletic background includes her brother, Jordan, who played soccer at University of Maryland Baltimore County and continued a professional career, most recently with the MASL's Baltimore Blast.
Mary Kate Kesler played a vital role in four successful seasons under coach Eleanor Mitchell at Louisville's Sacred Heart Academy, currently ranked No. 11 (Max Field Hockey) in the West/Midwest Region. A selection to Max Field Hockey's Watch List for the 2017 season, Kesler is a nominee for Kentucky's Miss Field Hockey award, given annually to the state's top player.
Kesler's varsity career included 60 points (23 goals, 14 assists) from the midfield for Sacred Heart, aiding a run to the State Championship in 2015. Kesler received All-State honors her junior and senior seasons, earning back-to-back selections to Kentucky's Juniors and Seniors All-Star teams. Away from her high school team, Kesler trained with Stealth Field Hockey and played three years at the National Futures Championships.
Kesler hails from the same city and high school as current Indiana senior Maddie Latino, who was a finalist Kentucky's Miss Field Hockey honor in 2013.
Megan Mahlandt led Ephrata in scoring during the last three of her four seasons under head coach Joy Rice, racking up 106 points (48 goals, 10 assists) in her high school career. Mahlandt ended her prep career with two Lancaster Lebanon League First Team All-Star honors. Mahlandt guided the Mounts to the Lancaster Lebanon League quarterfinals in 2016 and 2017.
Mahlandt honed her craft at the club level with Lanco Premier and, most recently, under coaches Brian Hope and Alli Lokey at X-Calibur. A track and field star during the spring, Mahlandt broke Ephrata's school record in the 4x800 relay her sophomore year. She was both a district qualifier with her 4x800 team and as an 800-meter individual.
Coach Janney gains her second player from West Deptford as Jessica McGivern joins her high school teammate, sophomore Ciara Girouard, in the IU jersey. McGivern tallied 86 points (26 goals, 34 assists) over four seasons under coach Linda Decker, where she won four South Jersey Group II Championships and three Colonial Conference titles. McGivern received two places on the South Jersey Team of the Year.
McGivern earned 10 total varsity letters in her high school career, including two years of basketball and four seasons of softball. With the latter, McGivern won the South Jersey Group II softball title and received first team honors.
