Hoosiers Split Pair of Matches To Close Big Ten Match Play

PALM COAST, Florida – On Saturday, the Indiana men's golf team split a pair of matches at the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Florida. The Hoosiers beat Nebraska in the morning match, 4-2, and the lost to Ohio State in the afternoon, 4-1-1.
After three matches at the tournament, each of the six IU golfers competing registered at least one win.
In the morning match against Nebraska, the Hoosiers took an early 2-0 lead thanks to commanding wins by Keegan Vea (8&6) and Brendon Doyle (6&5). After the Huskers got one back to cut the IU lead to 2-1, the three remaining matches would come down to the final holes.
Indiana freshman Brock Ochsenreiter took an early 1-up lead in his match and never relinquished that lead. He extended his lead to 2-up on the 16th hole of the match and then both players parred the 17th hole to give Ochsenreiter the 2&1 win and put the Hoosiers ahead, 3-1.
Nebraska got its second win, but Andrew Havill was able to force his match to the 18th hole, trailing 1-down. But both players would par the final hole to allow the Huskers to get the win and cut the IU lead to 3-2.
The final match on the course was Indiana's Jake Brown against Nebraska's Jackson Wendling. It was Wendling that took a 1-up lead on the second hole and then made it 2-up after four holes. Brown still trailed by a 2-down margin after 13 holes, but won the 14th and 15th holes to square the match. The two would go to the final hole all square and then Brown was able to clinch the win – in his match and the team win for Indiana with a par while Wendling posted a bogey.
In the afternoon match against Ohio State, the Buckeyes jumped out to early leads in three of the matches and easily won those to take 3-0 lead. Havill held the lead in his match from the start and came away with a 2-up triumph for, what would end up the Hoosiers only point of the match. The Buckeyes claimed another win – their fourth of the match – while Keegan Vea battled to halve his match.
Indiana returns to the course March 4-5 at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
