TEMPE, Ariz. - Indiana Softball (1-3) dropped both games of Saturday's Kajikawa Classic, falling to No. 18 Utah, 7-0, and to tournament host Arizona State, 4-2.
The first game of the day against Utah saw the Hoosiers pick up just a pair of hits, as junior Rachel O'Malley and senior CaraMia Tsirigos each collected a base knock.
Utah's Delilah Pacheco scored the first run of the day in the opening frame, coming home on a single up the middle from Anissa Urtez.
The Utes tacked on four more runs in the following inning on five hits and a pair of costly Hoosier errors. On a double steal by Alyssa Barrera and Kelly Martinez, two Hoosier throwing errors resulted in Barrera's run. Martinez was brought in one batter later on a single from Kay Kay Fronda. Two more Utah hits would push the advantage to 5-0.
Freshman pitcher Emily Goodin, who earned her first career victory against Seattle on Friday, then entered the game and posted a solid relief outing, going 5.1 innings with just one earned run and three strikeouts.
The final two Utah runs came on an RBI single from Martinez in the fifth and an RBI knock for Heather Bowen in the sixth.
Against Arizona State, Indiana struck in the top of the second inning as Tsirigos got the action started with the game's first hit of the day on a single through the left side. After a Sun Devil throwing error allowed junior Taylor Uden to reach, junior Sarah Thompson's successful sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. O'Malley brought in pinch runner Sydney Hester on a sacrifice fly to left field.
However, Arizona State would quickly tie it up as a Hoosier throwing error in the bottom of the frame allowed Marisa Stankiewicz to cross home plate. The Sun Devils threatened to tack on another run as they loaded the bags with a pair of outs, however sophomore pitcher Tara Trainer forced a groundout back to the circle to end the inning.
The Sun Devils would go on to take a 4-1 lead in the third after a three-run homer by Chelsea Gonzales to left center brought in Margaret Stahm and Avianna Davis.
Goodin, who came in to relieve starter Tara Trainer, once again impressed in the circle as she tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just four hits.
Arizona State knocked back-to-back two-out singles in the sixth to put runners on the corners, but a groundout kept the score at 4-1.
Tsirigos led off the final frame with her second hit of the game on a single to right center. Uden then doubled to left center to put runners on second and third with no outs. Following a groundout by Sarah Thompson, O'Malley scored pinch runner Kayla Mathewson on a groundout to close the gap to 4-2. However, a strikeout would put an end to Indiana's rally.
Indiana will wrap up play in the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday as the Hoosiers face St. Mary's at 1:45 p.m. ET. The game will be played at the Tempe Sports Complex and a live radio feed will be available at IUHoosiers.com.
