BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With the Big Ten Championships right around the corner, the Indiana University Track and Field team appears to be peaking at just the right time. At the Hoosier Hills Invitational this past weekend 26 collegiate personal bests were set by Hoosier athletes.
Eric Bethea has emerged in the triple jump during his sophomore season. After a podium finish a season ago at the Indoor Big Ten Championships in the event, Bethea has been steadily climbing the Hoosier record books. Last weekend at the Tyson Invitational Bethea jumped his way into the national attention. Eric won the triple jump with a mark of 16.34m (53-7.5), the fifth best mark in school history and tied for the fifth best jump in the NCAA this season.
David Schall won his first shot put event of the season. The sophomore from Avon, Ind. has been tremendous throughout his two years in Bloomington. Schall climbed to fourth on the Hoosier indoor list with a career best put of 18.80m (61-8.25) and is third among Big Ten throwers this season. Also in the shot put, Nycia Ford posted a lifetime best of 15.38m (50-5.5) in her winning effort.
Haley Harris was able to shave over five seconds off of her best 3,000m run. Harris won the event at the Hoosier Hills Invitational with a time of 9:39.51. In the same event, Katherine Free eclipsed her season best time with a mark of 9:51.21. On the men's side, Jackson Bertoli knocked off over 20 seconds from his previous best time. Jeremy Coughler won the event with a career best time of 8:09.46, a five second improvement.
The 400m dash saw similar success for the cream and crimson. In the women's race Kendell Wiles ran a 55.62, which is the fastest time ran by a Hoosier this season. Wiles was a point scorer a season ago at the Big Ten Championships in the 600m run. Adrian Robinson and Dushawn Tunstall were both able to better their best times in the men's 400m dash.
A pair of freshman pentathletes combined to set five personal best marks. Gracie Heeb ran a sub-nine second 60m hurdle time for the first time this season, finishing second with a time of 8.79. She later posted a 5.31m (17-5.25) in the long jump and a 10.97m (36-0) in the shot put. Jenna Jungels also went under nine seconds in the 60m hurdles, crossing at 8.96, and hit 5.56m (18-3) in the long jump.
Next up for the Hoosier track team will be a trip to South Bend for the Alex Wilson Invitational. Only a handful of runners are slated to compete as the team continues to work towards the conference meet. The remainder of the team will look forward to the Big Ten Championships in Geneva, Ohio at the end of the month, February 24 and 25.
