BLOMMINGTON, Ind. – For the fourth time this season a member of the Indiana University Track and Field team has been recognized by the Big Ten Conference.
Eric Bethea has been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. He is the first Hoosier to win the Field Athlete of the Week honor this season, and the first since Sydney Clute won last May. Bethea, a sophomore from Piscataway, New Jersey, won the triple jump at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas this past weekend. Bethea has been terrific in his sophomore campaign, climbing up the record books in the triple jump.
After a podium finish in the Indoor Big Ten Championships as a freshman, Eric has picked up right where he left off. He has competed in the triple jump five times this season and won four events. His lone defeat came at the hands of 2016 Olympic Games participant and Hoosier alum, Olu Olamigoke.
In the second meet of the season, a dual against rival Tennessee, he leapt into the top 10 list in the event with a winning mark of 15.68m (51-5.5). A week later against Purdue Bethea won the triple jump with a mark of 15.92m (52-2.75), good enough to move into a tie for seventh on the school's all-time list. Finally, the sophomore was able to break through with a huge mark of 16.34m (53-7.5) in Arkansas to claim the fifth spot in program history. Bethea currently has the fifth best mark in the NCAA and the best jump in the Big Ten.
