SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Just one week before the start of the Big Ten Championships, the Indiana University Track and Field team sent nine runners up to Notre Dame to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational. Both the men's and women's distance medley relay (DMR) teams had tremendous races, setting them up for a potential NCAA Championship bid.
The women's DMR team dominated once again, taking the crown at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The team consisting of Brenna Calder, Taylor Williams, Olivia Hippensteel and Katherine Receveur shattered their own school record. A few weeks back the team won the Meyo Invitational with a then-school record time of 11:06.15. Today, the team won the event with a time of 10:55.94, over 10 seconds faster than the previous best mark. Heading into the Big Ten Championships the team will boast the second fastest time in the NCAA and the quickest time in the conference. In fact, the time is good for a new Big Ten Conference record, besting the mark originally set by Michigan in 2013.
Calder led off the DMR with a 3:19.7 in the 1,200m run. She gave way to Williams who sprinted around the track with a 53.5 split in the 400m dash leg. Hippensteel was the third carry, running a 2:09.5 split in the 800m run. Receveur brought it home with a 4:33.4 mile split.
The men's DMR team team followed the women's example with a winning effort. The team comprised of Joe Murphy, Markevious Roach, Daniel Kuhn and Kyle Mau ran 9:28.14, the second fastest time in school history. That mark currently puts the team as the quickest squad in the country.
Murphy led off with a 1,200m split of 2:54.5 before handing the baton to Roach. He darted around the track with a 400m split of 46.2. Kuhn, an All-American, was next. He grabbed the baton and sprinted out to the lead, running a 1:46.9 split in the 800m run. Finally, Mau represented the last carry, running the mile split in 4:00.3.
Jordan Huntoon took care of the competition in the 800m run, winning with a time of 1:50.65. The junior has had an exceptional season thus far, and currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten in the 800m run.
The Indiana University Track and Field team will be back in action next weekend at the Big Ten Championships. The event will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The meet will begin on Friday morning and will conclude on Saturday afternoon.
