Hoosiers Fall Against Fighting Irish

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Madison Appel and senior Kim Schmider earned a win over the No. 32 doubles team in the country, but it wasn't enough as the Indiana women's tennis team lost to Notre Dame, 6-1 on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers top doubles team improved to 20-2 on the season with a 6-3 win over No. 32 ranked Brooke Broda and Monica Robinson.
"I'm really proud of the way Madison and Kim are playing this season," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "They have worked very hard and are seeing the results pay off in some great wins."
After winning the doubles point, the Hoosiers (5-4) won two first sets, but Notre Dame (5-1) went up 3-1 with three straight set victories.
After winning her first set, Appel battled but dropped a three-set match to Monica Robinson on court one.
Sophomore Natalie Whalen lost her first set, but battled back to take the second set. With the team match decided she played a 10-point third set and although she took an 8-4 lead she came up short, 10-8.
Sophomore Caitlin Bernard won her first set, but dropped set two and lost a hard fought third set, 7-5.
"I thought we competed really well today," Azcui said. "Natalie Whalen battled back nicely in her match and I thought Caitlin controlled a lot of her match as well."
Up next the Hoosiers take on No. 25 ranked Kentucky at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. This match will be played on outdoor courts, which are located adjacent to the indoor IU Tennis Center.
