SURPRISE, Ariz. – Indiana Baseball (2-2) dropped a 4-1 decision to the seventh-ranked Oregon State Beavers on Monday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. Indiana's run came in the fourth inning on a home run from senior Craig Dedelow.
Freshman shortstop Jeremy Houston led Indiana with two hits, including his first career triple, as he recorded his second-straight multi-hit game. On the mound, junior Brian Hobbie got the start, allowing three runs in five innings of work. Freshman Brad Littleton, Cameron Beauchamp and Cal Krueger combined for three innings with no earned runs.
Indiana's first two batters in junior Laren Eustace (walk) and sophomore Matt Lloyd (single) reached, but the Hoosiers were unable to get any runs in. The Beavers followed with a two-run, four-hit first inning.
With Indiana trailing 2-0, Dedelow brought the Hoosiers within one with a leadoff home run to right field in the fourth inning. The Beavers responded in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to put the Oregon State lead back up to two runs.
Houston led off the top of the eighth with a single, his second hit of the game. Then with one out, freshman Matt Gorski singled to give Indiana runners on first and second with one out. Oregon State called on its closer Max Engelbrekt, who got the next two batters in the frame to end the threat.
The Beavers tacked on an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Hoosiers will head to Boca Raton, Fla., beginning on Friday for a three-game set with the Florida Atlantic Owls.
