BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the third consecutive week, the Indiana University Track and Field teams climbed up the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) polls. The men's team soared up eight spots to capture the 10th spot in the rankings. The women's team rose one spot to 16th. Indiana ranks as the highest Big Ten team on the men's side heading into the Big Ten Championships. The women's team ranks behind only Penn State.
The 10th spot in the polls is the highest the Indiana men's team has been since 2013. That season saw the Hoosiers rank as high as seventh in the NCAA. The 16th spot held by the women's team is tied for the highest ranking attained since the polls started in 2008. The women's team was also ranked 16th in 2011.
For the second week in a row, the men's 800m team ranks fifth nationally. Daniel Kuhn leads the group and ranks third in the nation. The distance group is led by the sixth ranked 5,000m team. The 3k group ranks seventh with an average time of 8:04.55. The men's mile ranks eighth as a group, led by Kyle Mau and Joe Murphy.
The rise in the ranks can be attributed to a dominated performance in the distance medley relay (DMR) this weekend. The Hoosiers, comprised of Murphy, Markevious Roach, Kuhn and Mau, posted the nation's top time. The mark of 9:28.14 ranks second in school history, and is the 20th fastest time in the history of the event.
On the women's side, the 3,000m team is the highest ranked group. The 3k team is the ninth ranked team in the country. The 5,000m squad, led by Katherine Receveur, is the 10th quickest group. Finally, the mile group, led by Brenna Calder, ranks 13th nationally.
As with the men's team, the women's team received a boost from their DMR team. The team of Calder, Taylor Williams, Olivia Hippensteel and Receveur crossed the line with the 12th fastest time in NCAA history. Their time of 10:55.94 set the new school record, along with the Big Ten conference record.
The 10/16 ranked Hoosiers will be back on the track this weekend as they compete in the Big Ten Championships. The event will take place at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
