BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite winning the Big Ten Championships the men's track and field team dropped four spots in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll. The women's team climbed two spots.
In the final indoor rankings, the men's and women's teams both rank 14th in the country. For the women, this ranking is the highest they have been in the polls since the polls started in 2008. The men's team moved up to the number one slot in the Great Lakes Region.
The women have four groups ranked inside the top 16 nationally, all coming from the distance group. The 800m squad, led by Olivia Hippensteel, is the 16th ranked group. Brenna Calder is the leader of the 10th ranked mile group. Calder was the Big Ten runner-up in the event this past weekend. Katherine Receveur, the top 5,000m runner in the country this year, helps the Hoosiers to a seventh ranked 3,000m run team and a 12th ranked 5,000m run group.
The men's team has six groups ranked inside the top 16 in the NCAA. The strongest group is the 800m team, led by 600m Big Ten Champion Daniel Kuhn. He ranks as the fourth best half-miler in the country, while Jordan Huntoon is 45th.
The high jump squad saw a big boost following the Big Ten Championships. With Treyton Harris and Paul Galas both hitting career best marks, the team has jumped up to the fifth ranked group. Harris also helped IU squeak into the top 16 in the long jump. The sophomore won the Big Ten Title in the event, shattering his career best mark and moving into the top 20 nationally.
As expected, the deep group of distance runners helps the Hoosiers in the rankings. IU ranks inside the top 10 in the mile (ninth), 3,000m run (10th) and the 5,000m run (seventh). Joe Murphy, the Big Ten runner-up in the mile, Kyle Mau, podium finisher in the mile and Jason Crist, Big Ten point scorer, pace the Indiana distance group.
A total of 12 Hoosiers will close out the 2016-17 indoor season in College Station, Texas for the NCAA Championships.
