BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – According to the final rankings from trackandfieldnews.com the Indiana Hoosier track and field team tops the rankings for dual teams on the men's side and sits third on the women's sides.
"The ranking shows that we are building towards our goal," said head coach Ron Helmer. "We have worked tirelessly over the last couple of years to bring a balanced team to each meet we compete in. Being ranked inside the top five on both the men's and women's side shows how complete our team can be."
The men's team holds the top spot after defeating two track and field rivals in head-to-head competition earlier in the 2016-17 season. IU defeated Tennessee 71.5-49.5 back on January 7th and handled Big Ten foe Purdue 93-41 the following weekend.
The Big Ten conference is as good as it gets in the dual rankings. Indiana's men's track and field team is one of seven schools represented in the top 25 poll. Nebraska, the reigning Indoor and Outdoor conference champions, are third. Illinois (sixth) fell a few spots during the season but remains inside the top 10. Rounding out the top 10 are Minnesota (eighth) and Wisconsin (10th). Iowa is seeded 12th while in-state rival, Purdue, sits 16th. Tennessee, a victim of IU's vaunted dual team, ranks 13th.
On the women's side, the Hoosiers toppled Tennessee by score of 65-53 in the first dual of the season. Against in-state rival Purdue the Hoosiers survived a close score, edging the Boilers 73-62.
Once again, the top 25 rankings are loaded with Big Ten teams, including six teams in the top 10. Minnesota leads the pack atop the leaderboard, just two spots higher than the Hoosiers. Purdue comes in at fifth, Nebraska is sixth, Wisconsin ranks seventh and Iowa secures ninth. Illinois is the final ranked conference foe, ranking 17th. Indiana's first dual opponent of the season, Tennessee, ranks 12th.
The Indiana University track and field team will be back in action for the final home meet of the season on Friday as hosts of the Hoosier Hills Invitational.
