BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A trio of Hoosiers were named USTFCCCA All-Academic team members for the 2016 cross country season. In order to qualify the athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finish within the top 25 at the regional meet.
"On a regular basis our high level athletes also distinguish themselves at a high level academically," said head coach Ron Helmer. "This is not an accident, and while we do not take it for granted, we do recognize and value the efforts these individuals put into all areas of their collegiate life and experience."
On the women's side, Katherine Receveur earns All-Academic distinctions. This honor tops a season for the ages for the redshirt sophomore. Receveur became a star this past season, racking up the accolades and crushing school records. In the cross country season she was named All-Big Ten for her runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. Two weeks later she captured All-Region honors by finishing third place. She also punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 11th to earn All-America accolades. During the indoor track season she has taken down two school records and has placed herself in prime position to score points at the Big Ten and NCAA Championships.
On the men's side, Matt Schwartzer and Ben Veatch were both recognized as All-Academic team members. Schwartzer, the fifth-year senior, caps off a tremendous cross country career with this great achievement, the second of his career. In his four seasons running in the cream and crimson, Schwartzer earned All-Big Ten Second-Team honors twice and was named First-Team All-Big Ten this year after a fourth place finish. Schwartzer was the top Hoosier finisher in the Great Lakes Regional this year, finishing fourth.
Veatch was sensational in his rookie campaign. The freshman from Carmel took eighth at the Big Ten Championships and was named Second-Team All-Conference. For his efforts he was also unanimously named the Big Ten Freshman of the year, becoming just the fourth Hoosier to earn that honor. In the Great Lakes Regional he helped the Hoosiers earn a third place finish by crossing 19th.
