BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt freshman Kyle Mau was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year following a tremendous indoor track season.
Mau becomes the 15th Hoosier to take home Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in either track and field or cross country. Fellow teammate Ben Veatch earned the same honor for the cross country season following an All-Big Ten performance at the conference meet.
The Hudson, Ohio native is just the fifth Indiana athlete to win Indoor Freshman of the Year, and the first since Andy Bayer in 2010. The other three Hoosiers to win the award are Vera Neuenswander (2007), Regina Frye (1991) and Bob Kennedy (1988).
Mau was outstanding at the Big Ten Championships, earning All-Big Ten honors as a member of the distance medley relay. He received the baton, as the anchor leg, with the lead and did not relinquish the top spot. Kyle went on to finish third in the individual mile run, collecting six points for the Championship winning Hoosiers.
Last weekend at the NCAA Championships Mau garnered All-America accolades in the distance medley relay. Again, Mau ran the anchor leg and crossed the line in fifth place.
Mau, and the rest of the Indiana University track and field team, will be back in action a week from tomorrow at the Big Ten v. Pac-12 Challenge in Tempe, Arizona.
