Hoosiers Drop Big Ten Match to Michigan State, 5-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's team came up short on Sunday as they fell 5-2 against Michigan State at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (10-8, 1-2) were right with the Spartans in doubles to open the match. At one point two of the three matches were 5-5 and the other was 5-4. Michigan State ended up winning 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and 7-5 in No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Madison Appel took control early in her singles match and beat No. 117 Aslina Chua 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The Spartans won in straight sets on courts two, three and six to clinch the match.
Senior Kim Schmider won her first set 7-5 and won her second set 7-6 (7-2) to give the Hoosiers a second point.
After the match IU head coach Ramiro Azcui talked about the team giving themselves chances to be successful and needing to do a better job of taking advantage of their opportunities.
"I think we will learn and grow from these matches this weekend," he said. "We are looking forward to continuing Big Ten play and getting better each week."
The Hoosiers are back in action on April 1 when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue.
