Hoosiers take part in four spring tournament weekends
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 2017 spring season continues for the Indiana field hockey team, who opened the semester with a successful exhibition at Ball State. In total, the Hoosiers will compete in four tournament weekends. In that time, Indiana will receive an early look at several upcoming fall season opponents.
This weekend, the road runs through Trager Stadium at the University of Louisville. The full-field action on Saturday, April 1 will pit the Hoosiers against three Big Ten contenders, as they face the returning talent from Michigan, Iowa, and Michigan State. On Sunday, April 2, the same group of teams will split the field and play in 7-on-7 tournaments.
Hoosier fans can catch the team at home the following weekend on Saturday, April 8 in two exhibitions at the IU Field Hockey Complex. Indiana will take on Miami (Ohio) and Central Michigan, two perennial non-conference opponents from the MAC.
The first set of games for that weekend will run as two 25-minutes halves, while the afternoon session will be a single 25-minute period followed by a shootout. The schedule for Indiana's Saturday, April 8 tournament is as follows:
First Round (2x25 minute periods)
10:30 a.m. - Indiana vs. Central Michigan
11:30 a.m. - Indiana vs. Miami (Ohio)
12:30 p.m. - Central Michigan vs. Miami (Ohio)
Second Round (25 minute game, 5v5 shootout)
1:45 p.m. - Central Michigan vs. Indiana
2:20 p.m. - Miami (Ohio) vs. Indiana
2:55 p.m. - Miami (Ohio) vs. Central Michigan
The spring season will conclude with another trip to Louisville, the site of the 2017 NCAA Field Hockey Championship, on Saturday, April 22. The opponents and weekend schedule of events remain to be determined.
Indiana opened the spring season with a 2-1 exhibition victory against the Ball State Cardinals, with both goals coming from rising sophomore Ciara Girouard. Rising junior goalkeeper Noëlle Rother put on another stellar display between the pipes, including a solid performance in the shootout.
