
Hoosiers Drop Series Opener to Nebraska, 7-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite tallying another double-digit hit game, Indiana baseball (14-10, 3-1) fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 7-3 on Friday night. A four-run eighth inning for the Cornhuskers proved to be the difference.
Indiana had 10 hits in the contest, including multi-hit games from four different players. Senior Alex Krupa, sophomore Luke Miller, sophomore Matt Lloyd and sophomore Ryan Fineman each had two hits on the night, while Krupa, freshman Matt Gorski and junior Logan Sowers each drove in a run.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever was solid on the mound, scattering seven hits in 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out four. Freshman Brad Littleton also tossed a scoreless ninth inning in the defeat.
The Hoosiers got on the board first by piecing together a run on a pair of extra-base hits. Fineman led off the inning with a double to left center. Following two outs, Krupa doubled down the right field line to score Fineman, giving IU the 1-0 edge.
The Cornhuskers rebounded in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Ben Miller stroked a solo home run to right field to knot the contest up at one.
Indiana plated another run in the bottom of the fourth as it strung together three quality at bats to produce that run. With one out, Miller delivered a single to left field. Lloyd then connected on a double to right center field to give the Hoosiers runners on second and third. Sowers drove in Miller on a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Indiana.
After Nebraska plated a run in back-to-back innings to take over the lead, Indiana came right back in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game back up. With one out, junior Colby Stratten reached first on a single to left field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then with two outs, Gorski singled up the middle, scoring Stratten to tie the contest up at three runs apiece.
The Cornhuskers broke the game open with a four-run eighth. Following an RBI single by Miller, Luis Alvarado connected on a three-run home run to give Nebraska the 8-4 edge.
Indiana and Nebraska continue its series with a 2:05 p.m. start on Saturday.
