Weekend bookended by one-goal wins over top-25 opposition
BOSTON – The Indiana women's water polo team saw their winning streak extend to nine games with a perfect weekend sweep at the Harvard Invitational. The Hoosiers' (11-2) run included two hard-fought games against No. 16 UC San Diego (8-10) and No. 21 Wagner (6-9); in both games, Indiana emerged with a one-goal victory.
Notable performances on the weekend begin with junior Kelly Matthews, who throttled a career-high seven goals in the Hoosiers' win over Iona. That mark ties an Indiana single-game record set by 2016 senior Candyce Schroeder (vs. Bucknell, 4/17/16). Jessica Gaudreault, who accumulated 41 saves in 112 minutes last weekend, matched her career high with a trio of assists from the cage.
Game 10: Indiana 7, UC San Diego 6

For Indiana, the Harvard Invite weekend began with their toughest team of the slate, No. 16 UC San Diego. The Hoosiers and Tritons are notorious for close games, which made for little surprise when Indiana eked out a 7-6 victory.
The Hoosiers created their decisive separation in the first half, scoring five goals to UC San Diego's three. Megan Abarta broke a 2-2 tie in the second quarter with her first of two scores to pace the Indiana attack. Two consecutive strikes from Sarah Myers and Jennifer Beadle gave the Hoosiers a 3-0 run heading into the break.
The game-winner came early in the fourth quarter when Matthews dished her fourth assist of the game to Joelle Nacouzi. Indiana's defense, led by Gaudreault's nine saves and Matthews' five steals, stymied a late comeback effort by the Tritons.
Game 11: Indiana 15, Iona 8
IONA: 2 – 3 – 1 – 2
IU: 6 – 1 – 4 – 4
Indiana Goals: Matthews (7), Nacouzi (3), Williams (2), Myers (2), Abarta (2), Smith (1)
Iona Goals: Koshy (4), Schultz (2), Joshi (1), Nevins (1)

Matthews, Indiana's leading scorer over the last two seasons, entered the single-game stratosphere with her best goal output to date with a school-record seven scores. Nacouzi also continued her blistering start to her career with another hat trick—her third of the season—along with two assists and a team-leading three steals.
The first half between the Hoosiers and Gaels was hotly contested. Indiana answered Iona's game-opener with four unanswered goals. Matthews had her hat trick before the end of the quarter, drilling back-to-back-to-back goals in a 2:35 span. She scored her fourth of the game with one second remaining in the first period, countering an Iona power play. The Gaels went 3-1 on the scoring ledger in the second to make it a 7-5 Indiana advantage at halftime.
Matthews completed her day with another trip in the third quarter, interrupted by Myers' first of two scores. In the fourth quarter, Indiana scored three consecutive goals by Abarta, Nacouzi, and Myers, all on the power play. The Hoosiers finished the day 5-of-9 in power play situations while killing all four of Iona's advantage opportunities.
Game 12: Indiana 12, Siena 1
SIENA: 0 – 0 – 0 – 1
IU: 5 – 2 – 3 – 2
Indiana Goals: Myers (3), Matthews (3), Williams (2), Kozokar (2), Beadle (1),
Nacouzi (1)
Siena Goals: Bryar (1)
Gaudreault: 6 saves, 3 assists, 1 steal | Simmons: 4 saves
Box Score (PDF)
For the second time this season, the Hoosiers amassed a dominating defensive performance and failed to yield a goal until the final minute of the game. Matthews sparked a 5-0 run in the first quarter with two of her three scores, eventually completing her hat trick in the final minute of the second period. Myers also recorded a hat trick, scoring twice in the second half, followed by Mollie Williams and Karrie Kozokar with two scores apiece.
Gaudreault and Davis Simmons split the shift in the cage, combining for 10 saves and one steal. Nine different Hoosiers recorded steals in the defensive effort, led by Matthews (3) and Nacouzi (2). That performance on defense led to a doubling on the spray chart, allowing just 18 shots by Iona compared to Indiana's 36.
Game 13: Indiana 6, Wagner 5
WAG: 0 – 2 – 1 – 2
IU: 1 – 2 – 1 – 2
Indiana Goals: Beadle (2), Williams (1), Matthews (1), Nacouzi (1), Abarta (1)
Wagner Goals: Hardy (2), Begg (2), Sjogren (1), Watson (1)
Gaudreault: 14 saves, 1 steal
Box Score (PDF)
One of the toughest challenges of Indiana's weekend awaited them in their closer against No. 21 Wagner. Coming off of a thorough 10-2 IU win in their last meeting at the Bruno Classic, the Seahawks were determined to give the Hoosiers an improved effort in their second of three scheduled encounters. They delivered a close contest, but the Hoosiers pulled away in the second half for a 6-5 victory.
The Hoosiers and Seahawks went goal-for-goal in every quarter save the first. In the opening period, Jennifer Beadle found the net with two minutes left to create the decisive separator.
Indiana faced a 2-2 tie with the clock winding down in the first half. But with just four seconds left on the clock, Abarta found space for a go-ahead goal. It was Abarta's fifth of the invite, capping her most productive weekend of the season.
The Hoosiers maintained their lead in the second half with scores from Nacouzi, Beadle, and Matthews, and they held the line against Wagner's 2-0 closing run. Gaudreault tallied 14 saves, her second-highest count of the season, along with one steal.
