WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana men's tennis fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, 4-2, on Thursday morning at the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center.
In the loss, the Hoosiers picked up wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 1, No. 4 singles.
Juniors Raheel Manji and Keivon Tabrizi won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles but the Gophers took the remaining matches, winning the doubles point.
Tabrizi tied the match at 1-1 when he took down Eli Ogilvy, 6-2, 6-1 at the four singles spot. Tabrizi improved to 4-2 when playing at the four spot and won his second straight match.
Minnesota pulled ahead 3-1 when they grabbed wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 spot.
The Hoosiers pulled within a match when Manji protected the top spot with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win. Manji has taken three of his last five singles matches.
With IU threatening, the Gophers clinched the match victory when they narrowly won at the No. 6 spot in three sets.
"Yeah I mean it was a very small margin, it was an extremely competitive match that really came down to the wire," Indiana head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "I think we had 9 match points in the last two matches combined. At six singles we had four match points, at number two singles we had four or five match points so we win both of those matches and we're sitting here with a win. So I mean just one or two points that didn't go our way but we left it all out on the court and there's a lot to be proud of."
