ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Led by four home runs, No. 19 Michigan Softball (37-10-1, 17-3 Big Ten) defeated Indiana (22-28, 8-12 Big Ten) on Saturday in six innings, 8-0.
Michigan's Tera Blanco started the scoring early as she led off the second inning with a solo shot to left. A walk and hit by pitch threated to add to the Wolverine lead, but IU sophomore Tara Trainer earned her first strikeout to limit the damage. Trainer finished the game with four strikeouts and two runs in 3.2 innings of work.
The Hoosiers put their first runner in scoring position in the third as Blitz was hit by a pitch and stole second base, however she was left on.
The second Wolverine solo home run of the day extended the lead to 2-0 as Katie Alexander went the distance in the fourth.
Michigan put two on to start the fifth on a double and bunt single, setting the stage for Blanco's second home run of the game to push the advantage to 5-0. After freshman Emily Goodin stepped in and retired the first batter she faced on a strikeout, a pair of singles loaded the bases. Abby Ramirez brought two more home on a single to left center to make it 7-0.
Senior CaraMia Tsirigos broke up Michigan's Megan Betsa's no-hit bid in the sixth as she sent a two-out single off the glove of Wolverine third baseman Lindsay Montemarano. Junior Taylor Uden followed that up with a single of her own to center before a fielder's choice ended the inning. Betsa struck out nine on Saturday with the only two hits allowed coming in the sixth.
Natalie Peters ended the game in the home half of the frame, knocking a solo shot to right field.
Indiana closes out the regular season next weekend as the Hoosiers play host to Michigan State. The first game of the series is slated to begin Friday at 4 p.m. Admission to all Indiana Softball home games is free of charge.
