BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's tennis seniors Paula Gutierrez, Kim Schmider and Alicia Robinson will play their last matches at home this weekend.
The Hoosiers host Illinois on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and take on Northwestern on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Here, the seniors express in their own words thought about their time at Indiana University. We start with senior Paula Gutierrez, a management and international business major at Indiana.
"Trying to write this is been really hard. I can believe four years will soon be coming to an end. My career at IU has been completely incredible and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be part of this great program and school. I have so many people to thank that I would never finish but I really want to thank everyone in the athletic department that helped me during these years and that help IU women's tennis. I want to do a special mention to coach Loring that retired this past year. He is a legend in college tennis and he will always be one of the greatest coach's IU will have.
I also want to mention my teammates for supporting me in every step of the way and for being there for me on and off the court for whatever I need. Without my past and current teammates, this experience would have not been the same. Also, I am graduating next to the best person I could have ever asked for and that is Kim. She has been my person at IU since day one and I love her so much.
My last mention of course has to go to the person that has made my experience completely unique and perfect, and that is head coach Ramiro Azcui. He has been next to me on the court in every match since my freshman year. He has helped grow me as a player and as a person. The dedication and passion he has for his job is unbelievable."
Next is senior Kim Schmider, a sports marketing and management major at Indiana.
"My time at IU has been very special to say the least. It has been some of the best years of my life and I can't believe it is about to come to an end. The choice to come to Indiana is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
It has been an honor to play for such a well-respected program. I have made so many great memories that I will cherish forever. I know I am leaving IU with friends for life and I can't wait to continue making memories with them, even if I am 'across the pond'.
To the coaching and support staff, I can't thank you enough for giving me this amazing opportunity. You have helped me grow not just as a player, but also as a person. To my teammates, both past and present, thank you for your unconditional love and support and making Bloomington a home away from home. I will always be grateful for my time at IU and all of the people that I've met along the way! Go Hoosiers!"
Alicia Robinson is a student in the Maurer School of Law at Indiana.
"For the coaches to give me an opportunity to play college tennis again, after years of injuries, meant the world to me. They've been very supportive and understanding throughout the year and have tried to help me improve my game in any way they can. All three of the coaches have helped me improved many things technically since back in August when I arrived.
I've really enjoyed playing matches again and winning collectively as a team. The atmosphere when we are all playing well and competing is something I'll always remember. Having that feeling of winning for more than yourself is a great one. Overall I've just really enjoyed being a student athlete again and experiencing college tennis; it's something I wasn't sure I would ever get an opportunity to do again. I'm grateful to the coaches for the opportunity and I'm trying to enjoy every minute of it. I've also enjoyed being able to attend one of the top law schools in the country here at IU."
