Hoosiers Fall Against Fighting Illini

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match against Illinois on Friday at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Hoosiers (11-10, 2-4 Big Ten) lost the No. 3 doubles match, but Madison Appel and Kim Schmider gave the Hoosiers a 6-3 victory to stay alive. At No. 2 doubles Natalie Whalen and Paula Gutierrez came up short and Illinois won the match 6-4 and earned the doubles point.
Illinois scored the first two points in singles to take a 3-0 lead, but Appel put Indiana on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles.
Illinois clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three and picked up two additional points on courts four and two. On court two Gutierrez won her first set and dropped her second set. Since the match was already decided Gutierrez and her opponent Alexis Casati played a 10-point third set.
Up next the Hoosiers will host their final home match of the season on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Northwestern.
