WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana Baseball (15-13, 3-4-1 Big Ten) dropped a tough 7-3 decision to the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday evening. The Hoosiers left nine runners on base, while the Boilermakers left just one on.
Sophomore Luke Miller hit a two-run home run in the contest, his fifth of the season. Junior Logan Sowers and freshman Matt Gorski led Indiana with two hits apiece. Senior Alex Krupa also had a hit, drove in a run and scored. Junior right hander Brian Hobbie tossed a complete game, striking out six in the loss.
The Boilermakers got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning. The leadoff batter Harry Shipley reached on walk to give the Boilers a baserunner. Then with two outs, Evan Warren used the long ball to power Purdue to a 2-0 early advantage.
The scoring for the Boilers would continue in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles would start things off for Purdue. The two-out run production continued as Bryce Bonner connected on a two-run double down the left field line. Logan Poisall followed with a two-run home run to make it a 6-0 ball game.
Indiana answered back with three rebound runs in the fifth inning. Gorski tried to get things going offensively by leading off with a bunt single. After senior Tony Butler walked, freshman Jeremy Houston was robbed of an RBI base-hit that instead resulted in a double play. With two outs, Krupa stepped up with an RBI single to center. From there, Miller delivered the two-run homer to make it a 6-3 game.
Indiana had a chance to rally in the seventh. The first two batters reached on an error and hit by pitch. The Hoosiers would load the bases with one out, but failed to drive in any runs.
Purdue tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
The Hoosiers will face the Boilermakers in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
