BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - While former Hoosiers OG Anunoby, Thomas Bryant and James Blackmon, Jr. anxiously waiting to find out what direction their professional basketball futures will take them, here are some facts that you may or may not know regarding former IU players and basketball on the professional level, specifically in the NBA and ABA. Information provided by Basketball Reference.
• Indiana goes into tonight's NBA Draft with the most selections of any program in the Big Ten with 74. The rest of the league is as follows: Illinois (69), Michigan (67), Maryland (64), Michigan State (60), Iowa (54), Minnesota (53), Ohio State (52), Purdue (45), Wisconsin (40), Northwestern (28), Nebraska (26), Rutgers (21) and Penn State (12).
• Indiana has had a Big Ten best 58 former players play in an NBA or ABA game. The rest of the league is as follows: Michigan (47), Michigan State (46), Ohio State (43), Minnesota (41), Illinois and Maryland (40), Purdue (34), Iowa (31), Wisconsin (25), Northwestern (14), Penn State and Nebraska (11) and Rutgers (10).
• Indiana has had 24 former players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft which is tied for the most in the league with Michigan. The rest of the Big Ten is as follow: Ohio State (23), Michigan State (19), Maryland (18), Minnesota (16), Illinois (15), Wisconsin (10), Iowa (9), Purdue (8), Rutgers (3), Nebraska (3), Penn State and Northwestern 0.
• Indiana has had a Big Ten best 4 lottery picks since 2008. The rest of the Big Ten is as follows: Michigan and Ohio State (2), Illinois, Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State each had 1. Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Rutgers did not have any.
• Walt Bellamy (1961, Chicago) and Kent Benson (1977, Milwaukee) were selected with the No. 1 pick in their respective drafts.
• Archie Dees (1958, Cincinnati), Scott May (1976, Chicago), Isiah Thomas (1981, Detroit) and Victor Oladipo (2013, Orlando) were all chosen with the No. 2 pick in their draft classes.
• Other top 10 picks include Cody Zeller (2013, Charlotte, 4), Calbert Cheaney (1993, Washington, 6), Quinn Buckner (1976, Milwaukee, 7), Eric Gordon (2008, LA Clippers, 7), Ward Williams (1958, Ft. Wayne, 8) and Noah Vonleh (2014, Charlotte, 9).
• Vonleh was the youngest former Hoosier ever drafted (18.311 yeas of age) and Ward Williams was the oldest (24.325). Randy Wittman and Blab were 23 years old when drafted and Brian Evans, Ray Tolbert, Steve Downing, Greg Graham, Alan Henderson, Kent Benson, Kirk Haston, May, Mike Woodson, and Dees were 22 years old. Gordon was 19 years old and Anunoby and Bryant (19) also are teenagers.
• OG Anunoby is looking to become the first foreign-born Hoosier (England) to be selected in the NBA Draft since Uwe Blab (Germany) in 1985.
• Yogi Ferrell and Troy Williams were the first undrafted Hoosiers to play in the NBA since Eric Anderson (NY Knicks, 1992-93).
• Eric Gordon has had the most lucrative NBA career with guaranteed earnings of more than $123 million in his career. Victor Oladipo is scheduled to earn $105 million, while Cody Zeller will earn $72 million according to latest contract figures. All left prior to completing their eligibility and Oladipo and Zeller are IU graduates.
