As the 2017 regular season rapidly approaches, IUHoosiers.com will take an in-depth look at the position groups of this season's Indiana Field Hockey team.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers know what head coach Amanda Janney expects from her goalkeepers.
They have to be effective in communicating to the defense, one that ranked in the national top 10 for save percentage over the last two seasons. They have to anticipate, break down opposing attacks, and ready to send the ball for a quick counter.
That responsibility will fall on a new set of kickers this season. Over the last few weeks a trio of first time teammates—redshirt senior Katie Johnson, freshman Sachi Ananias, and Shelby Querry—have sharpened each other for Janney's third year with Indiana.
Johnson returns for a final season after an encouraging end to last year. She started the final two games of the regular season against No. 6 Penn State and No. 2 Syracuse, a considerable challenge for the first two starts of the season. Johnson rose to the occasion, making 19 saves on the weekend with a career-high 11 against the Nittany Lions. The senior has 31 career saves over 310 minutes between the posts, carrying .738 save percentage.
For the last two seasons Johnson trained in tandem with Noëlle Rother, who began training full-time with the German National Team after her sophomore year. Rother received first team All-Big Ten honors while leading the conference in saves per game (5.94), finishing her career with a goals against average of 1.96 (3rd – IU history) and five shutouts (3rd – IU history).
Johnson's new training partners come from excellent upbringings in the sport. Sachi Ananias grew up in Chile's national youth system, and last fall she was one of the youngest selections to their Junior World Cup roster. Ananias was also her team captain at The Grange School, where twice she was named the school's top all-around athlete.
Shelby Querry joins the Hoosiers from the heart of field hockey country, playing year-round with State College Blue Lions and State College Area High School. Querry was named Player of the Year by the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Conference (MPCC) and hoisted the District VI Championship trophy her senior season. She set a career high with 149 saves as a senior, ending her four-year tally at 354.
Whoever takes the turf at the start of the season will be flanked by a load of experience in the backfield. The Hoosiers return two-of-three starters on the backline in Nora Aucker and Elle Hempt, who will serve as co-captains this year. Andi Jackson, who worked her way into the starting lineup by the end of last season, joins the group as an option in defense or central midfield.
The goalkeeping corps have a handful of scrimmages before their first weekend test awaits, and they'll hit the ground running into the new season. The Hoosiers open the year at Louisville on Friday, August 25 before taking on the defending NCAA champion, Delaware, the next day. The Hoosiers play Wake Forest at a neutral site the following weekend, and in total they face nine of last year's top 30 offenses.
