Indiana’s freshman score four in first action on home turf
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team opened their preseason scrimmage weekend with a thorough 6-0 win over Saint Louis. Freshman Bente Buwalda led the Hoosiers with three goals, one of several outstanding games from the Indiana newcomers.
"They've been working so hard in our preseason practices, and we've seen glimpses of their brilliance," Janney said regarding the four goals scored by the new arrivals. "It's nice to see them execute under the pressures of game day. I think all nine freshmen are stepping up, but it's also awesome to see the mentoring from the upperclassmen as they newcomers learn to thrive in our system."
Buwalda got her goal tally rolling in the first few minutes of the second half. The Dutch international connected with a deflection from Ciara Girouard's initial attempt and sent it into the board for her first score in an Indiana jersey. Buwalda found her second in the 56th minute, redirecting Maddie Latino's driven entry pass into the high netting.
Twenty seconds later, Buwalda completed the hat trick. Fellow freshman Rylee Pearson drove the right wing and entered a pass to Buwalda, who hammered home her third attempt.
Another newcomer, Hanna Zarrilli, put one on the board at the end of the first half, before Buwalda opened her scoring run. She too capitalized on a defensive scramble, redirecting a rebounded save into the low corner.
Nora Aucker is usually breaking down opposing attacks in the backfield, but the junior co-captain proved how valuable she can be to Indiana's attack with two goals. She scored her first in the opening five minutes, tipping Girouard's corner hit inside the goalkeeper's right post. Aucker made a similar play in the bonus overtime period, deflecting Elle Hempt's corner hit over the goalkeeper's save attempt.
Girouard excelled in her new spot on the turf, setting the assist on Aucker's first goal before taking a solo run for pay dirt. Just four minutes after the Hoosiers found their 1-0 lead, Girouard made a run inside the circle and rocketed a shot across the goal line. The sophomore tallied four goals last season and started all 20 games of the 2016 campaign.
The defense held strong in their efforts to keep a shutout, allowing just a pair of shots on target and five shots in total. Senior Katie Johnson and freshman Sachi Ananias each made one save.
"This is what we've been waiting for since last November, so it's nice to get out there against a new opponent," Janney reflected on the importance of playing a true opponent. "It's encouraging to see our freshmen playing great and working within our system. The whole team really executed today and we're happy to see such positive sparks out of so many different players."
The Hoosiers return to the friendly turf at the IU Field Hockey Complex tomorrow, August 19 at 1:00 p.m. for a scrimmage against the Ball State Cardinals. This will be the final preseason scrimmage before Indiana's regular season opener next weekend, August 25 at Louisville.
