Hoosiers Win Season Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the ninth straight season, the Indiana Volleyball team won their season opening match with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-14) win over Ball State Friday at University Gym on day one of the Indiana Invitational.
Redshirt sophomore Kendall Beerman posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs and added three aces for the match.
Senior Jessica Leish tallied four kills in the opening set to give the Hoosiers early momentum.
"We have been waiting for this moment since January," Leish said. "We put in a lot of work this spring and summer. It was like a celebration. That is what Coach Dunbar said. You work all this time for something like this and it's like a party where you get to celebrate all your hard work. It definitely felt like that tonight."
The Hoosiers (1-0) hit .452 with 16 kills and two errors and won the first set, 25-13.
In the second set Ball State (0-1) took control and went up 19-14. Beerman came through for Indiana with a kill on an assist from sophomore Victoria Brisack.
Beerman added back-to-back aces and with the home crowd behind them, the Hoosiers closed the second set with an 11-3 run to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
The Hoosiers scored the first four points of the third set, but Ball State answered with four of their own to tie it 4-4. Indiana responded with four more to go up 8-4 and never looked back. The Hoosiers led the entire rest of the way and closed out the match with a 25-14 set three victory.
Freshman Alexis Parker came on at the end of the third set and connected on two kills to give the Hoosiers their last two points of the match.
Brisack recorded 35 assists for the Hoosiers and added three aces. In all the Hoosiers had nine aces in the match.
Indiana is back at it tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against DePaul. The Hoosiers close out the Indiana Invitational with a match against Indiana State at 7:00 p.m.
