BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Athletics Department is honoring a pair of former track and field greats in the coming months.
"We want to offer our sincere congratulations to both Roseann and Marshall," said current track and field head coach Ron Helmer. "Both of these individuals had a great impact specifically on our track and field programs and these awards further recognize the contributions they made to the athletic department and in a broader sense, Indiana University. They truly deserve this recognition and we want them to know how proud we are of them and how much they are appreciated."
Roseann Wilson, a 1984 graduate, will receive the Leanne Grotke Award on Friday, September 15. The award is given to someone whose service has made exceptionally outstanding contributions to Indiana University's women's athletics programs. It is the highest honor of its kind given by the University.
Wilson coached the Hoosier track and field and cross country teams at Indiana for a decade, 1989-98. She was twice named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and during her tenure she mentored 24 All-Americans and 28 Big Ten Champions.
During her running career, Wilson set the school record in the 1,500m run. She was named the team captain during both her junior and senior seasons at Indiana.
She was presented the Varsity Club Academic Award in 1983 and went on to earn both her bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education at Indiana. She will be given the award at the Henke Hall of Champions on the north side of Memorial Stadium this Friday.
Marshall Goss will be honored with the Bill Orwig Award. The award is given to a major advocate for the University and recognizes the outstanding contributions made by a non-alumnus to the Indiana University athletics program. Its namesake, Bill Orwig, was IU's athletic director from 1961-75. The award will be presented during the Clevenger ceremonies.
Goss spent 15 years as an assistant track and field coach under the late Sam Bell. After the legendary coach retired in 1998, it was Goss that took over the IU program. He held the position until 2004 when he became an Assistant Athletics Director for Game-day Activities.
Before coaching at IU, Goss spent 29 seasons at Bloomington High School South. He was named Indiana Coach of the Year for cross country in 1975 and track in 1980, on top of being named National High School Coach of the Year in 1982. During his coaching career at Indiana, Goss guided six All-Americans and 16 Big Ten Champions. He served as the Manager of Officials for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
A 1960 graduate of Indiana Central University, now known as University of Indianapolis, Goss earned eight varsity letters in both track and cross country. Goss was named co-captain in the 1959-60 seasons for the track and field team. He earned numerous honors as a high school coach and is a member of the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country, University of Indianapolis, and Monroe County Sports Halls of Fame.
