The Ireland international forward is the latest addition to the #HoosiersFH staff
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amanda Janney announced last weekend the addition of Nicci Daly to her coaching staff. Daly, carrying over 150 caps for Ireland's national team, joins the Hoosiers as a volunteer assistant coach.
Janney tasked Daly to work with Indiana's forward line, which comes naturally to the seasoned attacker. Daly plays domestically for Muckross Hockey Club and at the global level for Ireland, making her first international cap against Belgium in 2010. A year into her time with Ireland, Daly and her squad managed to force a 2-2 draw with Argentina, then the reigning world champions.
Daly also made an appearance with the Irish at the 2013 Hockey EuroNations Championship where they faced the Netherlands, Belarus, and the host nation Belgium. Daly has 152 caps in total with Ireland, and won the 2010 Irish Senior Cup with Loreto Hockey Club.
A love for field hockey brought her down to Bloomington, but it was a passion for auto racing that pulled Daly to Indiana from Ireland. Daly moved to the racing capital of the world to work as an assistant engineer for Juncos Racing in the Pro Mazda Championship, a sanctioned series of IndyCar.
It's no surprise that Daly gravitated to pro racing—or IndyCar, for that matter—as both run in her family. Her late father, Vivion, known around Ireland as the "Daly Express", dominated the Irish pro racing circuits throughout the 1980s and '90s and is considered one of the country's auto racing greats. Daly's uncle, Derek, drove in both Formula 1 and IndyCar during his career. Her cousin, Conor, is amidst his second season in IndyCar with three top-10 finishes this year.
