No. 1 Hoosiers Draw with No. 18 Michigan, 1-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team played the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
With the draw, the Hoosiers move to 4-0-2 on the season overall and to 0-0-2 in Big Ten play. Michigan goes to 4-0-2 on the year and to 1-0-1 in conference play. IU's six-match undefeated streak to begin the season is the 12th such start in program history.
Junior Andrew Gutman scored IU's goal in the draw, while freshman Griffin Dorsey recorded his second assist of the year. Indiana freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse made a career-high five saves.
In the 12th minute, the Hoosiers grabbed a 1-0 lead over the Wolverines after a blistering attack. After a turnover at midfield, Cory Thomas made a nice run and played the ball ahead to a streaking Thomas Warr. After cutting to his left, the freshman cracked a shot from 15 yards out, only to see his effort saved.
Warr's rebound fell to the foot of Dorsey, who fired a shot on goal from the left of the 18-yard box. The Michigan goalie was unable to hold on to the ball, and the rebound fell to the far left of the box, where Gutman hit a one-timer from six yards out, beating the Wolverine keeper to the far post. The junior's score was his third of the season and gave IU an early, 1-0 advantage.
At halftime, Indiana maintained a 1-0 lead over Michigan. Shots were 7-4 in favor of the Wolverines at the break, however, IU had the advantage in shots on goal, 3-1.
In the 51st minute, Michigan was able to find the equalizer on a counter-attack, as Robbie Mertz netted his first goal of the season. The score was just the second allowed by the Hoosiers this season and was the first surrendered by IU in 330:03 minutes of action dating back to Sept. 1 against San Francisco.
After being out-shot by UM in the first period, Indiana turned the tables on Michigan, out-shooting them 13-6 over the final 65 minutes of the match. For the match, shots were 17-13 in favor of IU, with the Hoosiers getting seven shots on goal to six for the Wolverines.
Six different Hoosiers had at least one shot on goal in the match, led by Dorsey, who had a pair of his efforts go on frame. Dorsey also led the team with four shots in the draw.
The No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers will head north to face Big Ten foe Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
