BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team dominated Rutgers, 5-0, on Friday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 6-0-2 on the season overall and to 2-0-2 in Big Ten conference play. The Scarlet Knights fall to 1-7-1 on the year and to 0-4-0 in league action. The undefeated record for Indiana through the team's first eight matches is the 12th such start, and second-straight, in program history.
With the offensive outburst, Indiana has now out-scored its opponents, 19-2, on the year. The 19 goals scored in the first eight matches are the most for the team since 2005 (19), while the six shutouts and two goals allowed in the stretch are the best in program history since 1993.
Junior Cory Thomas scored two goals, while both junior Austin Panchot and freshman Thomas Warr had a goal and an assist in the victory. Senior Timmy Mehl netted the team's other score, while redshirt freshman Spencer Glass, senior Rashad Hyacenth and redshirt junior Trevor Swartz all had assists for IU. In goal, freshman Trey Muse made three saves in recording his sixth shutout of the season.
On the attack in the 32nd minute, Warr found Glass just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the pitch. The redshirt freshman played a beautiful cross in, finding Thomas at the doorstep, who tapped it in from three-yards out to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, IU doubled the advantage on a gorgeous free kick from Mehl in the 43rd minute. From 28 yards out, just left of center, Mehl couldn't have placed the ball better, beating the Rutgers' keeper to the left to notch his second goal of the season.
At halftime, Indiana took a 2-0 lead in to the locker room. In a dominant first 45 minutes, the Hoosiers out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 12-0, getting seven shots on goal. Corner kicks were 3-0 in favor of IU.
The offensive onslaught continued for the Hoosiers in the second half. In the 59th minute, Thomas netted his second score of the match after a great cross to the right side from Panchot.
Just 44 seconds later, Panchot made it 4-0 for Indiana as he blasted home a goal from eight yards out. The junior hit a beautiful one-time shot after Hyacenth was able to head the ball to him from the left side of the box.
With just five minutes remaining, Warr finished off the scoring for the Hoosiers, notching his first career goal. After Swartz sent the ball in to the box, Rutgers was unable to clear and the ball fell to Warr, who made the most of his chance, scoring the team's fifth and final goal to give Indiana a 5-0 victory.
For the match, the Hoosiers out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 20-6, getting 12 shots on goal to three for Rutgers. Corner kicks were 4-2 for IU.
