Hoosiers Set To Host The Inaugural Sam Bell Invitational On Saturday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Hoosiers cross country team host the inaugural Sam Bell Invitational on Saturday morning at the IU Championship Cross Country course. The event begins with the 6K race at 10 a.m. with the men's 8K to follow at 11 a.m.
This weekend's meet honors former IU track and field head coach, Sam Bell who away at the age of 88. Bell is one of the most decorated coaches in the history of Indiana track and field. He led the Hoosiers to 22 Big Ten titles throughout his tenure (1970-1998) at IU. Indiana placed inside the top 10 in the NCAA Championships 23 times and the cross country team won two NCAA individual titles while Bell was here.
Bell was the five-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1992, the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 2000 and the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. Bell was awarded the Bill Orwig Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions made by a non-alumnus to the Indiana University athletic program, in 1997.
Nine women's teams and ten men's teams will compete at the IU Championships Cross Country Course, including Big Ten rivals Michigan's women's team who is nationally ranked fourth. Other teams participating include Nebraska, Columbia, Bradley, Miami of Ohio, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Tennessee Tech Men, Chicago State Men, Guelph (Ontario) and Windsor (Ontario).
IU's women's team will be led by the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week and All-American, Katherine Receveur. The redshirt junior made her season debut last week at the Battle in Beantown where she nabbed second place overall in the women's 5K. She will be joined by redshirt sophomore, Maggie Allen who finished eighth overall and redshirt junior, Brenna Calder who finished 12th overall at last week's meet. Rounding out the women's Hoosier attack will be Grace Walther, Haley Harris, Lexa Barrott, Kelsey Harris and Stacy Morozov.
The men's team will be paced by sophomore Ben Veatch who crossed first for IU and sixth overall last weekend in Beantown. He will be joined by redshirt sophomore, Kyle Mau who finished tenth overall at last week's meet. The men's team will also consist of Kyle Burks, Joe Murphy, Cooper Williams, Bryce Millar, Teddy Browning, Cameron Clements and Marcus Ellington.
